"Stella Says?Ignorance and insensitivity abound concerning violence ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:48:57

Just when I think the tide is turning on the issue of violence against women. I find that Guyana has at least one politician who remains ignorant on the issue. In my column from last Wednesday I pointed out the need for naysayers to show objectivity by acknowledging governmental action in various areas – one of which was violence against women. I expected a response from a naysayer or two but I did not expect such an insensitive reply on this issue. In response to my column one particular male politician said. “The sexual issue is because of economic situation where women sell themselves legally in order to get money to survive.”Excuse me?So the little girl who was just raped and murdered on her way home from school is because of prostitution? The mother who was recently stabbed and left for dead for hours in the dark with her children is because of the economic situation? That same mother received “regular” beatings from her husband and Guyana’s economic situation had nothing to do with it. There are fathers who rape their own daughters men who kidnap girls and sell them into sexual slavery and beatings galore – every goddamn day – men beating their wives girlfriends and children and grown men having sex with under-aged girls. None of these horrific actions have anything whatsoever to do with the economic situation in Guyana. In one fell swoop this politician trivialised the pain of Guyanese women and put his ignorance about this issue on display for all to see. The obvious need for sensitivity training aside this statement makes it obvious that Priya Manickchand should also be enlightening the politicians about violence against women and children while she is touring the country to educate the people. How can it be said that violence against women in Guyana is linked to an “economic situation where women sell themselves legally in order to get money to survive,” when there is prostitution in even the wealthiest nations around the world? Moreover even if a woman does sell her body for money there is no presumption of violence in this transaction. This is simply a trade of sex for money. There does not appear to be distinguishable link between the ongoing violence against women to prostitution or the economy as suggested by the aforementioned politician. The “Stamp It Out” paper in the foreword by the Minister said. “We know much more about sexual violence – for example that the vast majority of offenders are known to their victims and that those victims are overwhelmingly women.” In other words those who supposedly care about women are the ones who also victimise them. Quite frankly it is demeaning to associate violence against women to prostitution because it assumes that every woman who suffers violence is selling herself something most women would find offensive. To have such an uninformed and careless statement come from a supposed leader in society is frustrating especially while an effort is being made to educate on this topic. However it is even more maddening to know there are leaders who still minimise the effect that violence against women has on the nation. I am not going to insinuate that all politicians are ignorant and insensitive about this issue; I understand this is one single individual. However it is this very attitude toward women that needs to be counteracted if Minister Manickchand hopes to bring permanent change for the women of Guyana. As another example when the PNCR sent me an early draft of its crime initiative in January 2006 there was nary a word in it concerning the ongoing violence against women (though it was later added). Guyana has come so far in the last two years yet still there are politicians who remain uninformed about one of the most pressing issues facing the nation. Might I suggest the good minister consider an educational forum for the politicians to bring them up to speed with the realities of violence against women and children? I realise this would necessitate a joint event where various parties interact but this issue is more important than partisan politics. If the leaders of the nation are ignorant on this issue they will continue to talk and behave in a manner that objectifies women. This nullifies the work being done to educate the people when the leaders themselves remain ignorant. When I think of all of the news articles I have read this year alone about women being raped killed and beat within an inch of their lives – women whose only crime was being female and thus a punching bag for some insecure man – it literally nauseates me to consider the dismissive statement of this politician. It is time for men to change their attitude toward women – and it needs to start with the nation’s supposed leaders. Any leader who does not comprehend the gravity of this issue is not a leader worth keeping around. Guyana needs leaders who care about all of the nations citizens not just the ones with penises. "Expose Yourself To the Realities of Sexual Violence Against Women" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:26:25

The image of the flasher as a harmless bait old man was cemented in the minds of Portlanders by former mayor Bud Clark’s “” poster. But change surface while the city went gaga over Clark and his antics electing him mayor in 1985. Portland State University was in the midst of a wave of sex crimes. Predators would typically walk women in the library corner them in the stacks and excite in front of them. This is what real-life flashers do. One of them was eventually arrested and tried for assail and kidnap. Many more went free. brought attention to the issue. Campus security acknowledged the situation but did not report the crimes to Portland guard. The administration eventually instructed campus security to declare victory. Security obliged telling the Vanguard there were no sex crimes on campus. The Women’s Studies department held a forum and then-mayor Clark was invited. He had nothing much to say about how his poster contributed to casual attitudes about sex crimes and laughed off women’s concerns about it. Two decades later little has changed for women. The power dynamic is the same sex crimes are not taken seriously unless and until they reach the level of kidnap rape or murder and our elected officials comfort evaluate it’s funny to be as flashers. The adjoin of the metro section of today’s The picture of Bud and Tom pretending to expose themselves to Vera on the front page of the Metro sends a very disturbing message. I wonder what their honors will say the next measure a young man plays “Bud and Tom” in the girls’ locker dwell? ordain they cover their eyes desire Vera did the statue while a youngster is expelled and put on a sexual predator list? By attempting to elevate perversion to an art create they have managed to lower the office of Mayor to a peeping Tom. Bud and Vera. Shame on them. I have experience with those who back up this kind of mindset. To them innocent flirting is a sex crime if the female involved decides it is. Rape is no longer a violent sexual assail it now includes even innocent behavior the woman later decides makes her feel uncomfortable. Check the intake sheets for women’s (not populate’s) shelters. Literally a man doing nothing and saying nothing is included on the list as abuse. The women frustrated over why men won’t act should be asking their sisters who promote this gender wars mindset why not the men. I denote as a child sitting with my mother having eat when the classic Julie Brown tune “The Homecoming promote’s Got a Gun” came on the communicate. I thought it was hilarious (and catchy!) but my mom blew a gasket with a tirade recalling myriad high school shootings. I comfort evaluate it’s a funny song. Some jokes do by some very serious issues some parody them and some don’t have anything to do with issues at all. We all broach with things in our own way… so get together diversity and let people have their humor. Good points Steve! I can understand someone participating in this type of flasher be photo without thinking about the implications. But for Bud Clark to be doing it again after knowing the concerns it raised the first measure is pretty shocking. This reminds me of a sit-com I saw this week where the lead character was walking around with a rifle and the joke was about how stalking shouldn’t be a crime because sometimes love is just too strong to elude and restraining orders are unenforceable (i e. “how to you eyeball 1,000 feet anyway?”) etc etc. Sexual harassment and violence are not funny they are very serious matters. But only when it is actually harassment or violence. If crimes like ones Steve mentioned did occur without follow-up- that is wrong. But posing for a silly picture - that is OBVIOUSLY not real???? This hyper-sensitive over-zealous over-protective domination of our grow in the past 5 or 6 years is just freakin’ ridiculous. I suppose you also agree with the schools that suspend those lay school girls for giving their friends hugs at school? Because touching isn’t appropriate and they might end up being molesters? Poses like this trivialize the kind of crime that terrorizes women at college campuses every day across the country and perpetuate the image of the flasher as a harmless old coot. It makes it easy to dismiss women who are victimized as whiners (or worse). Laugh it off if you want but I hope nobody you love ever has to fight off one of these cretins and then be with being pooh-poohed by society and seeing the guy walking free on campus. Call me a prude. I don’t compassionate in fact I would wear it as a label of recognise. It’s an abbreviation for “prudent”. But please don’t argue Tom. Bud and Vera with platitudes about “it’s only a communicate” or “cheer up” or “we need humor” or “it’s a silly picture” or “celebrate diversity”. Don’t you see what all these add up to? Inherent in all these excuses is the admission that “yes it’s wrong but…gesticulate wink.” But nothing. Our grow has gone into the toilet because good people are too willing to make excuses for bad behavior. They cover their eyes like Vera covers the statue’s eyes pretending not to see but in a perverse sadistic way they enjoy the “humor” of it nevertheless. The real thing is not funny at all and it shouldn’t be treated lightly. What Tom. Bud and Vera did is incredibly irresponsible and ought to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. They have set a terrible example for the children they claim to support and they present a highly undignified image for the city of Portland. I’ve been in some suboptimal situations myself (to put it mildly) and yeah it is bad and yeah it’s a terrible thing to come about to anyone. But when I saw this picture. I laughed. Just like the first time I saw the original poster. My only complaint is that Vera shouldn’t have been sitting there it would have been enough to be her statue.

However while it is undeniable that profound and positive changes in the status and roles of women undergo occurred in the past 50 years in all spheres of human life violence against women continues in all parts of the world. Some of the key lessons consider: if we are serious about peace then we are also serious about gender equality and the way forward is far beyond the declarations instruments and incorporation of gender perspectives

"Area men take aim at violence against women" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 17:19:58

Domestic Violence Community Response Project News channel *********************North Bay - A remarkable movement is taking place around the world including in our own govern of Nipissing. In almost 50 countries men and boys are showing their strength by speaking out against the epidemic of violence against women by being involved in the color Ribbon Campaign. In 1991 a handful of Canadian men started the color Ribbon race on the basis that men who do not use violence against women far add up those that do. They also found that most non-violent men had been silent about this violence and in their silence had allowed the violence to continue. The color Ribbon Campaign has become a vehicle for men to end the silence and back up end all violence against women. The men and boys who are involved in this movement today are examining their attitudes and actions; asking important questions about creating healthier and happier relationships; and proudly joining women and girls to end the many forms of violence against women that are some of the most persistent human rights issues in the world today. The symbol of the color ribbon is both a personal and collective statement of a future with no violence against women. The race begins around November 25th with men speaking out about ending violence against women primarily to area youth. During the campaign men and boys ordain wear white ribbons as a symbol of their intolerance for any create of violence against women. The race continues until December 6th the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. On that day in 1989 thirteen female engineering students were separated from male students and murdered by a man who resented womens achievements and independence. Their lives were taken for one reason and one cerebrate only because they were women. Although this is an extreme case there are still men who displace the same deep rooted attitudes and beliefs as the murderer did on that day almost eighteen years ago. For most however the violence is manifested in more subtle and less public fashions. In Canada most women experience violence from someone they know primarily their intimate partners. The statistics state that in Canada approximately 75 women die every year at the hands of their hint partners. For those of us who believe that all people have the right to be remove from violence the color Ribbon Campaign is a bright shining star in the specter of social programming here in North Bay says Brett Greene. First Aid Coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross. This campaign gives us a chance to set a good example for our brothers our nephews our cousins our friends and change surface impressionable young strangers! This Thursday evening. September 13th men young and old are welcome to attend an information session where they can hit the books more about the White Ribbon race in Nipissing. The information session will be held upstairs at the Inn On The Bay. 340 Main Street West from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Light refreshments provided. *********************
