"Feathering my nest" posted by ~Ray

Feather quilting has eluded me. But now* I have who showed me how to do. Yee-ha! I love you. Patsy! Yes and ahem not one to really practice before slapping some feathers on a SHOP SAMPLE. I marked a spine and sewed some feathers on a shop sample. It’s not that I am that confident in my abilities. Trust me. I am just a lazy girl. In the case of moderate to massive stitching malfeasance we have a seam ripper and we go back to known quantities of stitching. Sometimes the feathers don’t look like they’re coming from a spine. Well. I’ll just watch that when I do another round of feathers around the outside of this SHOP SAMPLE. I took a machine quilting class last year to learn machine feathers. We just did the basic feathered wreath. These little videos have opened up a whole new world of feathers. I can’t wait to try. Isn’t Patsy’s DVD jsut WONDERFUL! was in fear of feather before that too. Now they’re my favourite thing to doodle. Haven’t worked up the courage to do more than practice yet but I’ll be doing them on a real quilt soon! Hi! I got MANY new viewers looking at my website today from your website so I HAD to find out who Mrs. Schmenkman was and I found your marvelous website! Oh my gosh your feathers are perfect! You’ve got that lucious curve of the plume down to a tea! I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to read of someone learning feathers because they are such a total blast to stitch! You go girl and keep posting!

"Much slower day" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-07 23:51:35

I’ve gotten very little done today. Mostly just sitting here at the computer browsing around blogs and such. And messing around with how to display my pictures. What I’ve done is uploaded some of them to my website and if you move on them it should act you to the larger pic on my site so you can see the detail better. I did act some pictures of various things. I’m almost embarrassed to show you the picture of the alter of which the angel do by (star baby?) fabric reminds me. *** I had no idea it was in such bad shape. adjust confessions measure: for the measure 2 (or 3?) years. I have left the Christmas decorating up to the men. I have had no interest in decorating and if they tree hadn’t even gone up. I probably wouldn’t have cared. All of which is to adjudge that it’s been awhile since I’ve actually looked closely at the tree ornaments.  I will undergo to investigate cleaning this poor thing up.  I’m also ashamed to admit that I’m not entirely sure how old it is.  Mom?  Dad?  *My* memory says it was for my first Christmas which would make it 35 years old but I’m not really sure.  (Not that I actually remember getting it that year….) You probably can’t read it but the reindeer has my name engraved on it. And here are some dilate shots to show you what the quilting on the Star Baby quilt actually looks desire. (All of these pictures are clickable) Apparently. I’ve been in a swirly mood lately as I’ve been doing lots of freehand swirls.  The color fabric was all quilted with small swirls the outer border with large swirls and the red fabric (in the star blocks) has a funky freehand curvy crosshatch thing.  Some of it is a little funkier than I intended but I just left it…. And lastly here is a picture of my big Christmas conjoin that I finally finished this year. This was a Block of the Month project from Joann’s in the Year 2000. I started quilting it the first year I had my quilting machine (2002) but had some affect and it has been sitting around languishing ever since. I did a couple of things that I would never do on a customer quilt — the large side borders (which I just quilted a few weeks ago) are completely different than the top and bottom. I was never going to be able to repeat the create by mental act I had done without annoying myself so I decided to not even try. If you really want to see detail photos let me know. The ones I took aren’t great but.

"quilt-a-long, week 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:51:32

Anyone care to do a quilt-a-long?I'll give you instructions on how to make a conjoin block each week. At the end of 12 weeks you ordain undergo enough blocks for a great start on a conjoin top. I was going to do a block of the month thingy with some friends back in Michigan but before I got around to it. I moved away. So it has turned into a virtual conjoin along and you all are invited. I chose some 30's prints from my stash and a cream tone on tone fabric. Cut one form 4.5" from your print fabricCut 8 squares 2.5" from your create fabricCut 4 rectangles 2.5" x 4.5" from your accent fabricCut 4 rectangles 2.5" x 8.5" from your background fabricSew together as shownAnd there you have your first finished block. So who's in? I'll add a enumerate to my sidebar linking to your blog (if you have one) assuming that anyone wants to join me. edit: this would be a great lay aside buster quilt-definitely use what you have-I experience I am. :) The one thing that I ordain be doing. (but you don't undergo to) is use the same accent fabric for each block. You can m ake this as scrappy as you be. The accent fabric will use little pieces. For dilate. I had a fat eighth of the red and I still had some scraps leftover. This of course will vary with each block. Any advance questions I ordain answer in the comments. (yay. I'm excited that you are joining in!) I would love to join in. Hopefully I can alter it a sampler/scrappy as I didn't experience this was going on and have no $$ right now for NEW fabrics. I'm trying to do some stash busin anyways :) Niki This would be good for me to do-- but my challenge is how do I begin to decide fabrics? This is while quilting scares me. I'm afraid my colors and prints would be butt ugly and then I'd be annoyed at myself. Any tips? jada2929,This is a HARD challenge to answer but I am going to try. ;)1. I would advise buying fabric that you LOVE if you don't like it it won't be fun to work with-trust me! 2 you could try to pick out some 30's fabrics desire I did here-they are VERY easy to be you could go with all pinks for the accent colors with a color or cream background or go with all greens etc or you could go with my standby color combination.. pink and green and yellow. :) it all depends on what you like or you could do a fall furnish and use go fabrics or christmas or all fabrics from one line-like denyse schmidt katie move capture fabric then you know that they all match and you just choose out a background color and you ordain be set.3 don't get anything with a huge create on it for this quilt since a lot of the pieces are going to be smaller scale does this help? Sounds desire fun!! You know my lack of quilting experience but I think I might be ready to learn. Might as well learn from the best! :) And the stash busting.. well you experience. It needs to happen! Alright. I have a challenge already. I plan to do all the evince fabrics from the stash but I think I be the neutral to all be the same fabric. How much neutral fabric do you evaluate we will need to undergo for this project? Thanks! Roxanne,I am not sure how much neutral fabric you ordain be but I can tell you that the conjoin I am using is about 4 yards. It should be plenty. (you see this is variable too depending on how you want to finish your conjoin.) Oooh- Ooohh - I want to join in! I don't have 30's stash but I can do it anyway with some misc cram right? I have soooo many projects going on alter now - let's throw one more in the mix why don't we?! Ha ha! My blog is www emandthegang blogspot com Such a fabulous idea!!! I desire I could join in but I am one who is able to admit my weaknesses and sewing is certainly not my strong suit. I ordain be happily following the group's develop though. I really like that you came up with this. Ooooh. I like this idea. I am trying to be really sensible & elude the temptation to accompany you as the weeks before Christmas are hideously work. Very tempting. Hmmm think I might talk my mum into doing it. She has just finished a 1930s conjoin top & this would be a lovely way to use the left overs. Thank you for being so generous with your measure in sharing this with everyone & answering all those questions! I ordain put a link to your post on our quilting assort site. Thanks to Bloom I have open your blog and would desire very much to join in your quilt-a-long as well but am not a blogger myself just like to catch up on what you wonderful ladies get up to so would it be alright if a non blogger joined in waiting with held breath for answer Gai P convey you for doing this amandajean! How fun will this be. I appreciate you taking the measure to inform and act pictures for those of us who are directionally challenged. I'm excited to take this a step at a measure. I think I ordain join along but I may have to act a few weeks to get started. I was just looking at a pile of 30s pinks and reds that I don't experience what to do with. Now I experience!Someone may undergo mentioned this already but maybe you should go away a flickr assort so everyone can post their squares. Such a lovely idea! I will be watching from the sidelines - I undergo never quilted and have very limited sewing undergo but I just ordered a couple of books because I'd love to hit the books. stacieknits, yes. I think I ordain give some basic directions for the conjoin process until the very end for some of the steps I may link to tutorials that are already out there and some may be a bit tricky without having done it before but it is attainable hope that helps. I finished 2 of the blocks tonight :) I'm thinking I want something about 4x6 blocks with borders no sashing ( but that could dress). I posted them on my blog this evening- thanks for the displace to use some of these 30's- I will think about it. A good idea though. I have some other projects that I should finish. And I think that I want to go away sewing clothes because I am tired of shopping for things that probably do not exist. Liberty, the quilt can be any size when you are finished.. it just depends on how you decide to set the blocks at the end of 12 weeks you will have 12 12.5" unfinished blocks. I am going to give some guidance on how to complete the quilt.. or you can choose how to end it with your own create by mental act. I think I have 4 yards of fabric for the background and borders and I am fairly certain that I ordain undergo extras when I am done with my nearly twin size conjoin wish that helps if you undergo further questions gratify let me experience thanks. one more question. I was getting started and was doing some measurements.... am I right in seeing that one fat accommodate will make 1 piece of each needed for this weeks project? so that if I bought one in contrasting colors. I'd have two blocks? mikilana,I don't experience if I would say that this communicate would be easy for a novice. It may be a bit challenging but it is a good way to start since there ordain be step by go instructions for the assembly of each block. And I am going to try to stick to fairly simple blocks as far as your challenge about the fabric. I am not alter on what you meant. I am using one main background throughout (I have 4 yards and it should be plenty) and then I am just using smaller pieces for the accent colors so I haven't calculated any yardage measurements sorry this is just the way I work. :)amandajean I'm going to try and connect in. My daughter is always wanting to quilt so I'll have her connect me too! You can affix my blog in the sidebar as those participating if you're still doing that. How fun! Thanks for hosting.

"The Beauty of Patchwork Quilts" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:31:36

Thrifty and imaginative practical and artistic. That’s how I imagine the makers of vintage patchwork quilts reusing scraps of clothing and other fabric to construct beautiful scrappy patchwork quilts. The fabrics don’t be the colors don’t “go”. But somehow it all works resulting in cozy bits of practical textile art. My new hobby seems to be finding old unfinished cast aside quilts and finishing them. This vintage Dresden Plate conjoin top caught my eye in my local consignment hold on. The Dresden plate conjoin requires some fancy cutting and sewing so change surface though the colors and fabrics weren’t what I would have chosen. I snatched it up anyway. Unwittingly used a very dense quilting pattern around the “plates” and it’s become quite a pretty little conjoin. I almost left this vintage Courthouse Steps quilt top at the shop. Hated the fabric that they chose as a border (not pictured here) which TOTALLY clashed with the rest of the quilt. However. LOVED the red bear on blocks and bold fabrics that made this quilt rest out from the usual vintage palette of whites and pastels. I could just see the little boys whose plaid shirts went into the makings of this quilt. Loved the random width pieces … obviously a scrap conjoin of the highest scrappy order. And today. I finished binding the latest quilt rescue a bag of quilt blocks that my dad found in his local thrift shop. Interestingly some of the blocks were hand-sewn others forge pieced making me query how many quilters these blocks had passed through. Again the use of many random fabrics of differing call color pattern and age. No discernible pattern but stitched together with a color/yellow polka-dot backing fabric and a sunshine yellow custom-made binding it looks desire a million dollars. Or maybe fifty. Who needs matchy-matchy perfectly coordinated accessories when you can adjoin yourself with color this fun? My favorite consignment obtain in the area is Tables to Teapots in West Acton. I try to stop by every weekend to see what’s new but my current problem is that the evaluate of stuff coming into the house is being exceeded by stuff LEAVING the accommodate. We undergo to apply a little correction before we hive away any more cram. I went there measure weekend and open some really nice linens with fireman themes. I didn’t post on my blog for fear the receiver of the linens would see them. My friend bought a set of dulcify molds. I think they were Wilton but they were cast press and HEAVY! Um. I think you have that the do by way round… It should be the evaluate of stuff coming into the house is EXCEEDING THE RATE OF stuff leaving the accommodate. "Quilts in the Sun" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 16:51:20

For the longest measure my grandmother who is an extremely talented quilter has been offering to make a quilt for my domiciliate. I’ve been stalling because most traditional designs don’t really fit my décor and I be to choose a pattern that ensures her masterpiece ordain get the use it deserves. After searching high and low for a design worthy of her stitches (and my living room) an advanced copy of the eleventh book by the legendary artist Kaffe Fassett found its way to my desk. The schedule is filled with stunning photography of 20 of his new bold patchwork designs and their patterns including my favorite. “Red Floral Parade.” I’m pre-ordering a write of the book for Grandma so she can get to bring home the bacon right way without fighting the crowds when it is released in stores nationwide on the 25th.
