For those of you who are still strugling with a nasty inspect of your new DVD-RW change state control not working in your older Toshiba notebook here is a nice little gem I open while I was looking to replace my own control on my Satellite 1415-S173. This Pioneer control has the necessary firmware update so it actually will work within your older notebook. Unfortunately i found this too late before buying another not functioning one LG GSD-T20N which gave me the now infamous IDE#1 error.. still waiting for the RMA to go it.... I experience that from reading various posts on this be many of you were looking for the actual solution. All that know/do work ordeal and how our aging little notebooks could not support newer drives. believe me nobody was more dissapointed than me after installing that new LG control only to find out that it's a nice little lemon when it comes to older Satellite models. On another say. I open out that this laptop is quite easy to fix with all the components divided into nice seperate little modules which can be removed and replaced. So far I replaced the HD (it finally died too after using it as an external drive for couple years) both left and alter hinges the touchpad the DC-in bring up and now soon to be hopefully working for me my new Pioneer control. One thing which so far I was not able to fix were two cables one color and the other color running from the mini-pci module (currently empty) to approve of the LCD panel (top cover) which I can only assume are the antena cables for the wireless separate which provide it with greater signal strenght. It appears they seperated from somewhere beneath the main board. They came off when I first opened this now aging Toshiba notebook. Since then I must have opened it at least 10 times. (that damn heatsink keeps getting clogged with crap!) The battery now needs replacing aswell only holds about 3 minute charge. (thankfully i open one cheap online) I also went through several power supplies over the years. Problem with these is that you can't buy a decent one below $90 at retail outlets like Best Buy. Radio Shack or Ciruit City. Online i was able to find them for much less which is a shame cause when you need one there isn't place to can buy them in a big city like Chicago for cheap. Ordering one online is about 30-40% cheaper than buying one at those above mentioned outlets. Here are my few cents... I was supposed to just communicate about the drive replacement fiasco but i needed to vent. My only suggestion remains that it's probably a good idea when buying a notebook to buy it with full extended (as long as possible) warranty since they seems to break like crazy and lets face it not a lot of people act apart their notebooks with a peace of mind as I have developped for exploit over the years. I just got my control and guess what it doesn't work. Laptop comfort shows up with IDE#1 error during boot and windows of course does not see it so I guess I can say that I am extremely dissapointed... couple minutes after I got it and installed it already requested an RMA so I can get my beat refund for the arouse thing that's alright i guess because I am upgrading to a whole new computer in bring together weeks saying goodbye to the Toshiba mark and saying hello to:or in another words A Clevo D900Cmind you it is expensive but I don't object see ya.
