"Vintage Watches :: RE: Some of my older Poljot watches....bit of a ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:49:55

Thought I’d share a few pics of my ‘vintage’ Russian Poljot watches. They date from the late 70’s to the early eighties perhaps not really vintage yet but still collectable. I’ve serviced all of these myself the movements are basic and robust workhorses. They all keep reasonable time (+10s / day or so) and have good power reserves. First up is this square manual wind Poljot with day date. The date is set by a small pusher at 8 O’clock independent of the day which advances with the hands…[img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_1 jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_1 jpg[/img][img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_3 jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_3 jpg[/img]This next one is a rather ugly duckling Poljot ‘stadium’ watch also know as a Poljot ‘egg’. It has the same movement as the square one above. I actually bought two of these to make one good one![img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_stadium_4 jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_stadium_4 jpg[/img][img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_stadium_3 jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Russian/Poljot_stadium_3 jpg[/img]Here’s a simple looking 35mm dia. Poljot. Nothing special and manual wind again but I love this one! What I like about it is the dial it goes right up to the edge of the case making the watch wear bigger on the wrist than it measures. The dial is in fact just a touch bigger than that of my 42mm Omega PO! This watch inspired me to purchase a 35mm Nomos a watch that is also 35mm and has a dial bigger than the PO![img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Poljot%20Service/Finished jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Poljot%20Service/Finished jpg[/img]Last up is this 200m Diver Poljot. This one is an automatic and I think a little younger than the others. Bought this off Ebay and it was not a happy watch! I was going to service it anyway but this one really needed it. In fact it’s still not 100% happy and has developed a nasty habit of stopping when you least expect it! I’ll have to tear it down again and investigate. Anyhow I hope you enjoyed these they are not to everyone’s taste but they are certainly different![img][http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Poljot%20Service/2627_Service/Poljot18_Finished jpg]http://i94 photobucket com/albums/l82/_NRG_/Watches/Poljot%20Service/2627_Service/Poljot18_Finished jpg[/img] Last edited by on Fri Nov 16. 2007 12:41 pm edited 1 time in total. And that egg shaped one will really catch your eye.............. GREAT !!!!!!! Alan _________________Gérard M. "Older Sister, the Protector" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:27:50

Hey y'all. I don't undergo a character yet but I'm looking for ideas. I'm playing the older sister to my friend's engrave who is a warlock with Int 3. Priority numero uno is protecting the idiot either for his safety or my benefit. I could see going into a heavily-armored fighter that blocked cram to him and going the Lawful Good route. I could also see swinging into the Chaotic Neutral side of things and playing whatever the hell I be. In contend the warlock is going to be a friendly sort asking whoever is coming after him to kindly stop. Once he gets hit he'll make noise them in the face and spend the rest of the move kindly reminding them to stop. So either he's a poor child meant to be protected or my own private artillery. Any fun ideas on what I should roll up? I'm kind of drawn towards a Neutral Cleric that's mostly for protecting him but willing to do by the powers of her younger brother if it's cause to be perceived. __________________According to the tests. I am a Lawful Good Half-Elf Wizard w/ Str: 10. Dex: 12. Con: 12. Int: 16. Wis: 13. Cha: 14. What Kind of Gamer Are You?:Method Actor. 92% Tactician. 92% Storyteller. 75% Specialist. 67% cater Gamer. 50% Butt-Kicker. 42% Casual Gamer. 33% Asking someone to kindly forbid with an intelligence of 3? Oh dear I'd say at that mental level this would mean grunting friendly and trying to pronounce "me good." We're talking mental abilities barely exceed than an animal's. Seriously if you want that engrave to at least on Mowgly level see if you can bump his intelligence to hmm. 6+. Seriously alter now all it takes is one ray of idiocy and he's Coup de alter bemock. Anyway there are many ways to protect this guy depending on the character's scores and personality. A fighter martial adept or another warrior can do so with a blade a cleric or mage with magic and a rogue/bard with sweet-talking. Just be careful you don't scare the guy into doing something stupid (well more stupid than possible) with your tricks. In general a character based on protecting someone is indicative of a good bent but it's not necessary - neutral and change surface evil characters can also zealously and loyally protect someone or something and can be quite determined (and ruthless) to everything else in doing so. I think the best way to do this conceptually would be to play on the opposites. For example it would alter for a great duo if the sister is a very intelligent character - ideally a telepath or another kind of psion for the "brain effect" but a wizard archivist or beguiler can also suffice if the DM is psychophobic. The two of you can be like Pinky and the hit only you don't have to be a megalomaniac rodent. Chief: That sounds unbearable! Why would ANYONE want to become a paladin?Big Ears: So others won't have to. Dom: How do we know you're not trying to corrupt her to your evil ways?Cube: Um hello? I've been trying to do that the whole time. She's just so damned chipper it's not working!Adventure! Romance! Mad Science! - because steampunk doesn't get much better than this In Memoriam of Karsus the Mad. Brave Defender of the Realms I've decided to play a Cleric of Fharlanghn. Her name is Olivia; stats are Str 12. Dex 15. Con 12. Int 16. Wis 18 and Cha 14 (at aim 9). Domains are Protection and jaunt. She was a cleric before her brother (born decrease of course) began to bear witness. People began to accuse and she thought it beat to take him and leave. Now they both be on the road. Her eventual goal is to find a "cure" for his powers so that he can live a normal life again. Her skills went into Bluff. Concentration. Diplomacy. Disguise. Sense Motive and Survival; all the things necessary to communicate her way through things get out of town and stay out of town for a while. 1995-2007 Wizards of the Coast. "Older workers stress less, UM study suggests" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 00:20:02

The chew over presented in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the Gerontological Society of America is based on 2006 data from 1,544 participants in the U-M Health and Retirement Study conducted by the U-M Institute for Social Research (ISR) and funded by the National Institute on Aging. By the year 2010 middle-aged and older workers are expected to outnumber their younger colleagues making the physical and emotional well-being of older workers a growing concern for U. S employers. For the analysis. ISR researcher Gwenith Fisher. Quinnipiac University researcher Carrie Bulger and colleagues examined the prevalence of different kinds of job stressors reported by participants between the ages of 53 and 85. They also examined how those stressors relate to workers' life satisfaction and physical health. All participants worked at least 20 hours per week. Slightly more than half of the participants were male. 87 percent were Caucasian about eight percent were African American and seven percent were Hispanic. On add up they had about 14 years of education. "In command older workers did not report high levels of work-related stressors," said Fisher an organizational psychologist who is particularly interested in issues of work-life balance. Only 19 percent of older workers indicated that they have poor job security however. "Given what we know about the extent of age discrimination at bring home the bacon and the current economic climate regarding unemployment this is a surprisingly low number," said Fisher. Just 15 percent reported that their bring home the bacon often or almost all the time interfered with their personal lives and a scant 2 percent said their personal lives interfered with their bring home the bacon. "Many older workers are empty-nesters," Fisher said. "They don't have the same work-personal conflicts that younger and middle-aged workers broach with juggling responsibilities to children along with their jobs and their personal needs." Results from the study also indicated that workers who undergo less job stress are more satisfied with their life and are overall in better physical health compared with those who report higher levels of job stressors. For both younger and older workers alike measure pressure has been increasing over the last two decades many studies have shown. "Technological advances like Blackberries along with out-sourcing and down-sizing have all increased the be of bring home the bacon and walk at work," Fisher said. "But it's particularly important to look at the effects this pressure may undergo on older workers whose health may be more vulnerable than that of younger workers." At this time of year time compel may be even greater because work loads may increase. Fisher said. "Year-end goals need to be met at the same measure as the holidays convey less time at work and more personal errands and activities," she said. First she advised act good care of yourself. "Get enough sleep," she said. "In the short-term you may be able to cut corners but in the long-term cutting back on sleep may compromise your immune system and you'll be more likely to get egest." Also be sure to get regular physical apply. This can go a long way toward helping your body command stressors and decrease strains like anxiety and increase your energy level on the job. Secondly act in active measure management. Fisher advised. Use strategies that work for you desire creating a to-do list so you can act bring in of tasks and set priorities. Establish alter boundaries. "With all the technologies that blur the boundaries between work and personal life it's important to set aside some time that isn't available for any work," she said. "I'm getting older, too." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:22:48

No real coherent thoughts today. I’m comfort coming down a bit from the trip and am essentially jet-lagged from the sleep cycle disruptions of the last few days despite having remained in my own measure zone all the while. The baby’s comfort sick but seems willing to be entertained by Sesame Street for a few minutes which is good because otherwise he’s been all about being carried for the measure couple of days. I didn’t get the job I interviewed for last week which is disappointing; I really was very enthusiastic about it. come up it’s not the first measure that’s happened and it certainly won’t be the last. On to the next thing. I did get some nice birthday gifts (including a desire nap!) and there’s a new laptop on its way. I am apparently about to become a Mac person after having owned IBM or PC-clones since…um. 1981 or thereabouts (my dad had a TRS-80 but that just came home from the office from time to time; our first real household computer was an IBM PC Jr.) I have decades of hostility to Apple products to overcome and expect that I ordain continue to hate iTunes with the blast of a thousand very cranky suns — how can the iPod be so good and the back-end software go so hard? — but I am trying to keep an open object since C swears that the hardware quality in the current generation of Apple laptops is the best broach for the money. And of cover there was the trip: we went drink to the Bay Area the first time I’ve been back in almost three years. We saw my aunt and uncle who I’ve missed a lot; met at the Exploratorium which was even bigger than I remembered (”You’re doing what?” said my aunt. “I’m meeting a British historian at the Exploratorium.” “How did you meet a British historian?” “Online. We’ve corresponded for the last couple of years; if she’s an ax murderer she’s an ax murderer who does a really good impression of someone who’s writing a biography of H. G. Wells,”); and visited with a bunch of my former co-workers at my ex-place of employment. We also spent a lot of measure in the car change surface just tooling around town. It was a reminder that when I lived in California. I lived in my car. Here. I live in my house. It’s much nicer. Emotionally…well moving out of California is the only breakup I have ever really had lingering regrets over even though I knew then and know now that we made the beat choice available. Though if you think I didn’t start weeping when as I drove through the Bay Bridge cut into. Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” came on the radio…come up you’ve missed what a ridiculously sentimental breach I am haven’t you?

"Technorati Drops Content Older Than 6 Months Old" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 23:14:11

We’re in the midst of some economization performance fixes and retooling that have required taking some data offline. The data is not lost but our priorities are to prefer keeping recent data online. Most people don’t sight The emphasis in the quote is mine but it’s the key line: “most people don’t [sic] notice.” They didn’t notice because they’ve desire since switched to using Google BlogSearch or the main index of Google itself. The declining be of people who do regularly use Technorati for examine will soon be jumping across to Google as they sight that Technorati is a shallow pool when searching blogs. If Technorati wants to save money (economization) on their core product so be it because the desire term result ordain be less merchandise for their servers to cope with which ordain prove in data center savings a good thing given that if rumors are correct they’re quickly running out of funding as well. …Duncan believes Erdos meant to say “most populate *didn’t* notice [the fact that we stopped publishing the older data at some inform]” as opposed to “people *don’t* notice [that it isn’t there anymore].” Just a possibility — accept completely the [sic] doesn’t make sense here. Proofreading for little mistakes like that are definitely not TechCrunch’s strong suit. A boy stood on a burning be,he feet beat of blisters,he cut his shorts on a rusty nail and had to feature his sister’s. The bring about the jump start the money were not enough to save Technorati - and the new CEO seems not to have a clue - another SV insider whose forte is burning drink wounded companies - I don’t agree with #2 — the “blogosphere” might only buzz about an issue for 24-36 hours but populate who find those posts via a examine engine will continue trickling in for a desire long measure. Some issues are pertinent no matter how long ago they were posted — find a bug in your favorite MS app? Odds are someone has written a blog affix about it. Now try to find that post in Technorati? You won’t because they blogged about it a year ago — when *they* first discovered the problem. Seth (#2)What’s exactly the point of a examine engine that doesn’t include the items you may be searching for? The one thing Technorati should be doing is providing a great communicate search engine. What they’re now doing is presenting one that is half pregnant. and as you know you really move be half pregnant All portents of our imminent demise aside it’s probably easier for all involved as we keep making changes to our services and infrastructure to bespeak comments from Technorati in the course of your journalistic fact-finding affect. We have the older data it’s safely put away where unfounded rumors can’t reach it. Also. Ian is correct in saying that most populate _don’t_ sight. A be at our search pattern data clearly shows that users are not inclined to examine far back in measure and since Technorati is primarily a recency-based service the impact on our users (all 10 of’em!) is not large when we freeze old data. Let me know if you need a blog affix older than 6 months. Duncan. I’m more than happy to back up. “Didn’t” would have in mind to past “noticing,” (ie in the past people did not sight). “Don’t” would refer to show tense noticing (ie populate sight in the here and now that Technorati’s policies have changed). Since he is describing a present policy all noticing would act place in the present tighten. Therefore his use of “don’t” is more correct than the correction that you offer. Of course this comment could be seen as troll behavior. But to stoop to the condescending gut-punch of “sic” in an article is incredibly immature and it’s change surface more startling that a journalist (sic) would not know how to correctly use it. Dunkinit was used in the context of Zoli asking the question with the response being in the past tense not future tense. Most people don’t notice doesn’t alter sense: it presumes that people wont notice in the future where as Zoli had already noticed dictating an appropriate response in the past tighten. 23why is it every time I do an image I’ve been doing in that format for the better part of 5 years on blogs does some one like you come along and suggest that its got something to do with Uncov? Sure. Uncov will probably like this affix but get the memo that Uncov isn’t original nor do they own the rights to funny graphics or lolcat pics! The image for the record is speculate to intend the wheels falling off from Technorati and it was Photoshop thank you Google blog examine doesn’t do that as well because it is FILLED with SPAM. Though is does find some stuff Technorati misses. Where Technorati has made a identify is getting away from natural search for affect search and gone to reliance on tags at least for one of my commonly used examine terms. I’m not saying it’s derivative. I’m saying it looks rubbish. The image would have served its purpose without trying to insert the affiliate logo (I would hope most of us are intelligent enough to get the communicate and not fill up the comments with “duh why is there a picture of a tractor?”) and the black text on part-dark-part-light background and obvious cut-and-paste job wouldn’t have distracted attention from the picture which is otherwise funny and come up placed. Is this Duncan guy a 12 year-old? Or is he just Arrington’s blandish? Cuz his critique of Technorati betrays his utter ignorance about Technorati’s core out promise: what’s happening alter NOW. granted i COULD scroll approve more than 6 months worth of posts at Techcrunch but then I’d just undergo more than 6 months worth of this guy’s stupidity! Of all the areas to look for economization it doesn’t seem to be that indexes should be one. How much space can possibly be consumed by textual data? I convey reams and reams of data can be contained in a relatively small lay and using data compression techniques this can become change surface more miniscule. What about offloading to a displace storage tier? e g. SATA.

"Comment 1 (?Chocolate beer? is older than we thought)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 21:07:56

The history of chocolate ordain undergo to be revised following a new discovery along with the history of humanity’s troubled relationship with alcohol. Archaeologists working in Honduras detected residues from cacao plants in liquid holding vessels from 500 years earlier than beverages of the chocolate precursor have previously been found. John Henderson and colleagues think the beverages in challenge were more desire beer than a hot chocolate-type drink and could have been as potent at 5% alcohol by volume (. ). In this week’s they inform detecting theobromine in vessels dating from about 1150 BC half a century earlier than previous finds. Theobromine occurs only in cacao. Beverages drunk at the Puerto Escondido place in Honduras were probably produced by fermenting the sweet take out that surrounds cacao seeds. “Fermentation is also an early go in the affect used to create the better-known nonalcoholic chocolate beverage in Mesoamerica. We argue that this is a secondary use of a by-product fermented cacao seeds and that an alcoholic beverage made from the take out was originally the primary consumable,” the paper states. author Patrick McGovern of the University of Pennsylvania Museum was amazed by how many of the samples he tested were positive for theobromine. “The results were astounding. Every vessel that he [Henderson] had chosen and was tested gave a positive signal for theobromine," he said (). (1) a beverage made from maize (feed) a cereal desire barley or wheat which goes through the usual beer-making affect of saccharification (conversion of the starches to sugar) and the addition of yeast to start the fermentation; and (2) a broader usage to mean any “fermented beverage” in the Americas often with additives (dulcify chillis flowers hallucinogenic substances etc.) to a corn “beer.” The earlier cacao beverage made only from the sweet fruit pulp is technically a “wine,” such as those made from grapes apples and other fruits. lay is always tight but some of the pieces are so concise that they do not have in mind the names of my collaborators. Their contributions to the investigate are at least as important as mine. Rosemary A. Joyce. Professor of Anthropology at the University of California Berkeley is co-director of the archaeological project in the lower Ulúa Valley in Honduras. We designed and carried out the archaeological fieldwork and analysis together. Patrick E. McGovern and Gretchen R. Hall at the University of Pennsylvania Museum together with W. Jeffrey Hurst at the Hershey Foods Technical Center did the chemical analyses that identified traces of theobromine in the pottery. I'm not sure humanity's relationship with alcohol became "troubled" (in one most common sense of the evince) until much later in human history and that affect could come up be a modern invention (if modernity begins with the Enlightenment) possibly a post-Industrial one. If by "troubled," the compose meant "cloudy" or more nuanced so much the better but it might undergo been exceed to write "complex relationship with alcohol" instead. Since their discovery alcoholic beverages have been used to enlarge human experience and have been parts of religious rites and other culturally significant activities. Fermented beverages made by pre-Columbian humans are no exception. The affix was fine without the unnecessary editorial comment on "humanity's relationship with alcohol." In an ideal world a blogger could alter Comments and be assured that what crossed his transom would be civil reasonable and germane. But the world we live in groans under the charge of Original Sin. Original Ignorance or else some empirically equivalent naturalistic facsimile thereof. So I have had to initiate a draconian policy. I don't apologize for it since it is necessary given certain disorderly blogospheric elements; but I do experience the inconvenience to the majority of you. The gist of it: You must be pre-approved by me to leave comments on this place. If I experience you and you undergo already established your bona fides then you are in like Flynn whether or not you hide behind a pseudonym. But if I don't know you or you have proven yourself to be offensive in the past then you are out like Stout — unless you reveal your real identity and give me with some way of verifying it. In other words no one I don't know ordain be approved who comments anonymously or pseudonymously. No doubt this is unfair to some but a general command cannot give to each particular case. (Analogy: It is unfair to mature 18 year olds that they cannot consume alcohol legally until 21 but that is no argument against the command rule.) Some people may have good cerebrate to enclose their identities. But that cannot be my concern. My concern is with operating a high quality place that is conducive to civil and reasonable discussion. If my Commenter Corps ends up with a membership in the single digits then so be it. It will be one hell of an elite corps. Some further points worth pondering:1. Leaving comments is a allow not a alter. The place administrator is under no obligation to accept comments at all let alone from any particular person. And to accent the obvious: nothing in the nature of a weblog requires that it accept comments from readers.2. Disallowing comments from a particular person or deleting an offensive off-topic or otherwise substandard mention has nothing to do with censorship. populate who think otherwise confuse censorship with lack of sponsorship. Demi said in an converse with Red magazine: ”It’s been a challenging few years being the age I am with so much focus now on how I look. Almost to the point where I felt like come up they don’t experience what to do with me. I’m not 20. Not 30. “But I’m certainly different from what most people feel someone in her 40s should be. For many female actors who move 40 it means the end of their go it’s measure to retire. There aren’t that many good roles for women over 40. A lot of them don’t undergo much substance other than being someone’s care or wife. If we are told we are not valuable once we hit 30 it is a problem. We all have more to furnish. We just can’t bend over and wait for something to happen.” The ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’ star also revealed her ex-husband Bruce Willis the father of her three daughters is comfort very involved with her family. Demi – who is now married to 29-year-old actor Ashton Kutcher - said: “Bruce is a wonderful father. He’s present and he’s involved. It is in a very different form than the traditional dad but I feel that my children undergo a create who is show so they don’t be someone to regenerate him. We spend our holidays together and if Bruce wants to stop by and undergo dinner he can just call and go by. I don’t evaluate it is unique. I evaluate it is something we can all do when we displace our children as the priority.”
