12 Signs Of A Mystery Shopping Scam

 <modified>2008-03-26T01:43+00:00

If you've ever been curious about becoming a "mystery shopper," a person paid by a affiliate to analyse in on a hold on's performance you should experience there's lot of fraudulent mystery shopping companies out there if you think one of these jobs is a good way to pick up extra cash desire:
"An application fee is a sure write that your mystery shopping company is a fraud. What job would ask you to pay an application fee? The say is none."
In command you should beware of an "opportunity" requiring anything in the advance payments. And anything that looks too good to be adjust like promising lots of money for very little bring home the bacon is also highly suspect.
After about 2 months. I was getting offers to do more mystery shopping but declined basically because I never got my $15. But then after about 4 months (A VERY LONG TIME). I did end up getting a check for what I was owed but since I declined some of the other mystery shopping tasks they never did offer any more to me.
Anyway yea - as desire as (1) you don't pay any money upfront and (2) it is not to buy something you don't need or expend money (for example they offered me tasks to buy smokes - but I don't smoke so I wasn't about to suffer my money with those) - the only thing you might suffer is the time to fill out the survey.
Back in the 80's my family was a Shoney's mystery shopper- we went WEEKLY and they paid for the entire meal for a family of four. Man. I got really sick of Shoney's because we did this for 2 years. But since we were kind of poor it was a great thing. Although my mom was always scared they would figure out we were shoppers and we would be fired. You had to inform on everything down to the minute (when you walked in were greated were seated were given wet orders taken food arrived, etc.) My mom had a little notebook and she would create verbally everything drink covertly. I think I've eaten at Shoney's once in the measure 15 years.
I used to mystery obtain and recently came across the journal I used to keep bring in of how much I was owed and by whom.. the jobs were usually for between $5-$10 plus reimbursement for eat/dinner which wasn't bad it was the sell ones where you got $5 and had to go buy something and then return it the next day and do two surveys and you didn't change surface get to keep the product.
There were a few jobs that were worth it but you have to keep on top of signing up for the jobs and do them right on time and within every little dilate they say or they won't pay.
Mystery shoppers are funny. They are typically really easy to sight and are fun to toy with. At one store I worked at we new who the mystery shopper was but never told the managers. The company sent the same person once a month for the year I worked there. She would always go in around the same date and the same time. I would send waves of sales people at her offering every hit function and product we had to furnish at the measure and while in the store she was almost never out of arms reach of an employee even if they were just straightening shelves.
We were the number 1 store in the country for mystery shops and got a clump of awards for it. When me and the populate I worked with all quit (manager was a bitch) we took our awards with us and let corporate know that our manager knew who the shopper was for the past year.
Ms No49 was a mystery shopper - until she got a nasty infected back up degree destroy that required heavy antibiotics and missed doing an "emergency shop" that the organization "desperately needed" done. Those "desperate needs" shops drove her nuts because she would offer to do them and would never get it yet a week later another email would come in and there'd be the "desperate need" to do one.
They never contacted her after saying "sorry. I got badly burned" and checked on her to see if she was better or able to do more shops.
Wtf ever. If the obtain wasn't done "just right" they wouldn't pay her either and it was always some sort of small technicality too. Missed a name tag didn't write the stuff in the right order whatever. She's says she's never been happier since being "fired."
They can be a lot of work for only a little money. The best way to alter out on them is to fasten to one kind of obtain with the same affiliate (such as abstain food). You get a free meal and a little adjoin for your efforts. If you do well and meet some requirements you can act up to the ones that pay better money. But you are competing with housewives and students and do work writers so it all works to keep the pay drink (though I'm amazed how well they pay when they are up against the protect to get the shop completed).
My wife and I used to mystery shop for Bugaboo Creek. It was a pretty good deal: get an appetizer main course and desert and they would cover the cost (up to a $50). When they complained to me that we always ordered the same thing. I pointed out the what we ordered was under $50 and that we had never been told to request more than that. We had one really bad undergo on a particular mystery shop and it was reflected in our inform. We stopped hearing from them after that.
Heh my roommate tried signing up for one of those but because she was new they would only give her a $10 job (which would adjoin her ticket at the particular shop). She ended up going to a party and forgetting about it called me at the last minute and said that if I did it she'd change integrity the profits with me. Gee so spend $10 on a ticket do all of her bring home the bacon for her and maybe get $5 from her eventually? As if. She was really pissed when I told her no thanks.
@: While you can alter $10 (including the freebie --- meal merchandise oil dress) it takes a while to do it consistently. There's a food arrange with these.. experienced shoppers get the best shops and the exceed fees. Once you factor in the prep time jaunt measure shop measure and report out time it's maybe $5 an hour until you are doing some of the higher end ones. The best are when you can feature one trip into 2 or 3 shops at one measure.
It is NOT a way to support yourself. It's not easy work it's not for the non-detail-oriented it's not $10 in 10 minutes or even $10 an hour.
I started doing it to help alter ends meet then kept it up because I enjoyed the work and the occassionally freebie. I'm extremely picky about shops and do only those that are so convenient I'd be going to the store anyway. It's now just remove money in my Paypal be that I can pay on ebay or plate Jewelry unify.
command #1. Don't pay for shops including for certification. Research companies for legitimacy on sites like. Rule #2. Don't expect it to be something it's not. TANSTAAFL--no one wants to give you something for remove. There will be work involved you will be required to be meticulous about noting timing details names descriptions number of customers and cater prices exactly what was said and by whom and more. You will not only undergo to pay x be of measure in the store but you ordain be to submit a report online within a specified be of time refer the receipt via a certain method (online via email fax or mail) within a specified amount of measure and keep records until you get paid (which ranges from a few weeks to a few months after the job). If this comes naturally to you as it does to me it may very well be worth a remove meal and $10.
The secret shoppers who go to our store generally ask for something we don't carry and then buy the cheapest thing in the store. Our store failed a bring together of shops because we didn't declare alter items (she asked for narrow width shoes and we didn't suggest she try the normal width that wouldn't undergo fit her) and we didn't ask her to change state a charge (who's going to change state a charge to save 10% on a $3 unify of clearance earrings?). Of cover after reading the reports. I'm convinced the shoppers our affiliate hires are idiots. One asked for a sweater and said the clerk asked if she wanted like or polyester (not a question any of our employees would ask since none of our sweaters are 100% cotton). My favorite described the work as having short hair when the girl in question has hair drink to her waist. Anyone that unobservant shouldn't be a secret shopper.
Take that quote from an Federal Trade Commission article on the Secrets of Mystery Shopping to heart and you’ll be able to sniff out a lot of mystery shopping scams without the help of the red flags I’ve listed below. The furnish line is that mystery shopping is a side pursuit at best and anytime you comprehend any promises or comments hinting that they can offer you more ordain be a good sign that you’re dealing with a bad company. If you’re one for lists the following might be helpful but nothing beats your “gut feeling.”
An application fee is a sure write that your mystery shopping affiliate is a fraud. What job would ask you to pay an application fee? The answer is none.
Asking for lots of personal information. If someone asks for your social security number it’s likely a cheat. The most they’ll ask is for your name and your address so they can mail you a check. Some will ask for a bank be to enjoin deposit funds but that ordain always be optional if they are legitimate. If they demand that you furnish them a social security number or your tip account it’s likely a scam.
They contact you because of a resume you posted on a job website. Legitimate mystery shoppers won’t contact you like this only scammers will scour employment websites for marks.
Promises of how you’ll earn thousands in your spare time (or even a more modest $30/hr). While the potential to make thousands is there the fact of the be is you’ll be a tremendous be of forbear time to acquire that much money. The pay from a mystery shop simply isn’t that great compared to the time it takes to end it.
They are internationally based. You have far less protection when dealing with an international company and they undergo more latitude in screwing you if they want to there are plenty of companies in your home country that you don’t need to deal international.
You will never handle lots of money. One popular scam after you’ve signed up is to deposit a huge analyse (over $1 is huge) into your account and then undergo you wire that money out to another account. This is a twist on a popular fake international check cheat that’s all the rage (this is why Dr. Smith in [insert international affiliate here] emailed you the other day and wants your back up and ordain give you $1,000 for you to change his $20,000 check). You will never handle lots of money because what company would pay you $20 to deposit a $10,000 check? Let’s.

Are Your Mystery Shopping Results a Mystery?

In most organizations most of the measure the idea of "engineering the customer experience" becomes a "scripting" of the desired behaviours of front-most customer-facing associates. Mystery shopping or customer service auditing therefore becomes an exercise of observing and recording behaviours based on the premise that if associates "act" the desired "script" the outcome - a positive experience for customers - ordain be manifested. It's all very logical. Trouble is … it's bunk!Reality analyse: Do your mystery shopping scores correlate with your customer satisfaction scores and your tangible measures of performance? Or are they a mystery. Take a be and decide for yourself. Are your mystery shopping scores up to your objectives consistently in all locations or is there great variability between locations and within locations over measure? Is your mystery shopping "schedule" a source of celebration and success or ongoing irritation frustration and pain? And what about for your customer-facing populate? Most mystery shopping more often than not measures the wrong things. Here's an example of one mystery shopper's final comments:"I was greeted immediately and was treated professionally and politely throughout the entire encounter. I found the SA (sales cerebrate) to be knowledgeable of the products that he was promoting. He went to assign to inform the differences in the air modify supports and flexing the shoes and pulling out the insoles to show the soft conclude and give that the shoe ordain give me. He was hit on with his request to be at some other garments immediately after we had the apparel selection done. I came away from the tour feeling as though he had a genuine concern for my satisfaction with the fit and conclude of the shoe. He did not keep the up sell with me as he was starting to look after other customers and left me on my own to find a unify of tracks and go and try them on. He was serving someone else when I came out of the dressing room and asked how they were on my way to the cash desk to which I said. I just did not like them and was only going to take the shoes. I found the dressing rooms to be clean and tidy and well lit with lots of dwell to try things on. The SA seemed to be very enthusiastic about his answer and seemed to apply what he was doing. I would have no problem in recommending this store to my family or friends."Many of the comments of the mystery shopper were connected to the sales "compose" all associates were required to "act." What score does this function experience be? What would this undergo "advance" in your program? In this specific business the score was a feeble failing grade as the incredibly scripted series of behaviours was not performed to perfection. My act is that we have a front-line associate serving multiple customers and doing quite an excellent job. This is a very positive function experience as described by the shopper. The example cites a prompt greeting politeness product knowledge genuine concern and caring a clean and come up maintained store the positive "engagement" and enthusiasm of the associate all while serving multiple customers and the shopper create from raw material to be an advocate of your business. What advance does this service experience be if your measurement measure rated the shopper's outcome? At least a 4 on a scale of 1 to 5? What would this experience "score" in your schedule if the score was based on the outcome and not the overly scripted behaviours? What is it that we're after? What do we want our customer-facing associates to achieve? What is the desired outcome? Is it to:A - act the script perfectly … or B - create an extremely satisfied customer. Sorry to say … A doesn't get you to B. There is a better way - a much more mysterious way to create extremely satisfied and loyal customers. More next time.
Put Some Mystery in Your Life

Mystery shoppers. For some it conjures up images of private eyes and undercover detectives. That’s fair. In Nevada a mystery shopper is required to register with a tighten that is in association with the Private Investigative Licensing Board. Somewhat funny but true. If you obtain and I’m sure you do you undergo probably bumped into someone on a shopping assignment. Did you notice them? Doubtful. Or you may undergo found yourself on the receiving end of an evaluation by a mystery shopper. Did you cognise it at the time? Probably not. But what is mystery shopping exactly? And can you really make money for shopping?
Mystery shoppers are primarily independent contractors. They acquire their assignments from mystery shopping companies. These companies have been contracted by various businesses in be of mystery shoppers. Mystery shoppers handle a wide be of assignments. They may be required to request a personalized bracelet at a fine jewelry hold on and then return it. (Not an easy assignment. I actually had that one once). They may be asked to gamble at a local casino or take in a popular movie. They may be asked to take their dog to a groomer visit an auto dealer or go to a spa. The possibilities are truly endless. A mystery shopper doesn’t know from day to day what new assay may land in their inbox. And some assignments truly are an adventure. Cruise ships use mystery shoppers.
Any adult can be a mystery shopper. Both men and women are shoppers. Shoppers may be employed unemployed self-employed or retired. There are programs for shoppers that offer certification but it is in no way required to be a mystery shopper. Mystery shopping companies give any special training that may be needed. Internet find is becoming more and more necessary to bring home the bacon with most mystery shopping companies but there are some small companies that don’t require it.
Each shop has detailed instructions so it’s very important to be able to follow instructions. It’s equally important to be observant and reliable. While you are mystery shopping you ordain be observing customer service product knowledge of the salesperson quality and other standards important to both the business and its customers. After a shop is finished a inform is completed. It may act a few minutes an hour or change surface longer. If the thought of completing a report makes you wince in pain then mystery shopping is definitely not for you. In some cases you ordain perform video shops. In these instances you ordain be trained on how to use special video shopping equipment. (Video only…no audio for legal reasons). This sort of shop really does make you feel desire a private detective and is quite fun.
How much a mystery shopper earns depends on the type of obtain time required to perform the shop and the difficulty of the shop. say: Mystery shoppers use their own money on assignments. They are not always reimbursed for items not returned. Payment for the obtain may act as desire as two months.
* sell Stores: Payments typically be from $5 - $40.

Many shoppers do this in their spare time. They may earn $100. $200. $500 or more per month. Some shoppers alter their living as beat time mystery shoppers. It’s not easy though. It usually requires working with a large number of mystery shopping companies — perhaps 60 or more. Full measure shoppers undergo their hands full — juggling assignments reports and due dates. beat time shoppers must be very organized but it can be financially rewarding. Full measure shoppers can acquire $40,000 per year and more!
Shoppers receive 1099’s from the mystery shopping companies each year. Companies are required to send 1099’s to contractors who are paid $600 or more per year but some companies will displace you a 1099 regardless of the amount you were actually paid.
Although you don’t have to pay to mystery shop you may consider joining a mystery shopping place. These sites charge a fee to access their directory of mystery shopping companies. You could probably sight some of these companies on your own but it is doubtful that you could sight all of them.
Mystery shopping is not for everyone but for those who want to put some mystery in their lives…without endangering themselves…it doesn’t get any exceed than mystery shopping.

UPDATE on mystery shopping invitation I received..SCAM !!!!!!!!!

 <modified>2007-10-28T14:03+00:00

Hi. I got invited through postal send to be a mystery shopper. I just emailed and contacted the actual website and asked them if they invite through postal mail and I also asked them why their communicate mailing address was different from what is printed on my invitation. They said their site is legit and they do not ever send an invitation through postal send. They said whoever sent me the invite is a scammer. I hate SCAMS. I knew it was too good to be true.
I am glad you found out it was a scam!! I didn't evaluate it sounded right=) At least yu can go to the web-site and maybe join their company. But I evaluate if you have to pay to join that is just silly!! I bought a list of companies off of Ebay for like $2 and I got over 200 companies information then just went on-line and filled out the applications. It does act some time though. You could search on Ebay for "mystery shopping Ebook" and I am sure tons of things would come up. The Ebook ordain undergo tips for you and the list of companies. Good luck!!
Thank you. Me too. I knew it didn't sound right either. I would love to experience legit mystery shopping sites that didn't require a fee upfront. I don't think we should undergo to pay someone to work for them. I acknowledge any tips you can give me with this. Thanks.
I hate scams too. It is a good thing that you were cause to be perceived enough to contact the company. I am a mystery shopper and bring home the bacon threw sites I found on the net only. I undergo never been contacted by any threw the mail but they undergo scheduled me over the phone at times. Hope you don't furnish up on mystery shopping due to this unfortunate happening.
I get one of these mail invitations once every couple months and it has always been a scam. A few have even included "checks" for thousands of dollars. Makes me sad to evaluate that populate actually fall for this. My favorite is when my inbox gets flooded with the "10.5 million in a bank in Nigeria" emails. I've been getting a lot of those lately.
Yes. Same here. I hate scams and alot of populate are getting rich fromthis cram and the innocent people are being scammed and getting into alot of affect. I hope this will be an eye opener for alot of populate. Thanks.
I am glad you didn't undergo to learn that the hard way. Whenever anything seems to good to be adjust it probably is. You should always investigate any offer before signing on the bottom line so I am glad you did your homework.
Thanks alot cassidy22. I appreciate that. I knew it was too good to be adjust also is why I checked into it a little bit more. I'm glad I did also and I am glad that I asked my Mylot friends about it too.
There are many many scams out there in cyberland. I know that I send paypal at least ten emails a day that are phishers trying to get my information. I also displace emails to ebay that are not alter. As for other come up I use the rule of ride and that is if it is too good to be true it usually is. I also check the detail lie in the telecommunicate address part. If the email has come from several servers before it hits your server it is a cheat and they don't want it traced back. Most of the measure when you analyse detail in the telecommunicate you will see the actual website address there. You can look at the dilate of your telecommunicate from mylot. You ordain see alot of information and it all should look furmiliar to you and when you go down a little you ordain see the words mylot there as come up. This detail is very informative and from this you can express the telecommunicate is legitamete. The other thing you can do is on the sites you use a lot check to see if they have spam or fraud departments that you can forward these emails to. They can express right a way if the email is from them or not. Please do not hit on any link in the email if you are suspicious as that ordain open you up so the spam can get direct of information you do not want them to undergo. If you do open a cerebrate like this that is re-create go right to your account and change passwords. Good luck. We must act watching because there are so many populate out there trying to take favor any way they can.
Hi. Wavs accept to Mylot. I see this is your first affix read guideslines that ordain help you a lot answer everyone else's post you get more reate everyone affix long topics and replys. I am just trying to help I have been here for a year.
Thanks for the tip Wavs1952 and accept to Mylot. Thank you for the tip. I ordain have to check that out also. I was invited through regular postal mail so I had alot of investigating to do to alter sure this affiliate was legit or not. Mystery shopping companies tell me they only invite through emails so the mail I got in my mailbox was a scam.
Yes. That is why I investigated it more to alter sure before ever going to the tip. I knew it sounded too good to be true. I just had that feeling. The mystery shopping affiliate that this person claimed to be told me they only invite through emails not through my postal mail.
Hello stephcjh. Glad that you found out that it was a cheat. It is lucky that you don't accept.
