The Faculty Senate has approved the 2008-'09 school year calendar after delaying approval of the calendar over concerns that graduation would fall on Mother's Day. Patrick Casey chairman of the Faculty Senate said some faculty and staff members always express disappointment when the graduation ceremony is scheduled on Mother's Day."This year we decided to put off approval of the calendar until we had gathered comments from anyone interested in offering suggestions," Casey wrote in an e-mail. "As it happens the calendar for 2008-'09 proposed this past spring didn't have graduation scheduled for Mother's Day."Graduation for the Class of 2009 will occur on May 17th. 2009 the week after Mother's Day while graduation for the Class of 2008 will occur on Mother's Day. Casey added. "The problem is that we have been having graduation on Sunday and Mother's Day also falls on Sunday and the two coincide most years," Casey wrote. The Faculty Senate has asked the academic standards committee to look over the calendar approval process to move the calendar discussion to earlier in the year. Casey wrote. The calendar approval discussion usually occurs in April or May but Casey wrote he would like to see it moved to late fall or very early in spring."This will help to avoid last-minute controversy," Casey wrote. He added that this should help avert any problems the Faculty Senate may have with the schedule. Leslie Chambers chair of the committee said she's heard faculty and staff members complain about graduation interfering with their celebrations of the holiday since she started teaching here in 1991."It would be nice if everybody got to spend Mother's Day with their mothers if they want," Chambers said. Casey wrote he does not think moving graduation to a non-holiday will become a rule but rather a guideline to follow."There are a number of hard rules that govern the calendar," Casey wrote. "When all the requirements have been met. I think adjustments may be made to avoid having graduation on Mother's Day."Casey wrote that families looking to celebrate the holiday won't be the only ones who benefit from the change. "There has been some indication that local restaurateurs would prefer that we not have our graduation on Mother's Day as graduation and Mother's Day are both big business days for local establishments," he said. Melissa Sullivan a manager at Friendly's Restaurant in Olean said that despite the large amount of customers on Mother's Day. Friendly's is always prepared for it."It's probably our busiest day of the year," Sullivan said. "We're usually well-staffed and ready to go for it though."
