"BushCo's Mental Cruelty Towards Louisiana" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-25 19:22:23

( - promoted by jill) This is one of the most spirit-shredding things I have to write about. But I need to. It is heart-wrenching and it makes me almost physically ill that the mainstream media hasn't been covering it lately. For over two years. Louisiana has been desperately struggling to survive and recover against tremendous odds. Not the least of which is an excruciating epidemic tearing her apart that has been sapping her strength--the human resources she needs to become whole. Storm and flood survivors in Louisiana are now being lost to serious illnesses both mental and physical suicides (up 300% in the New Orleans area) substance abuse and violent crime. Louisiana is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. And I say Louisiana not only New Orleans. cerebrate being in the diaspora from that drowned city evacuees fled to Baton make up. Shreveport. Lafayette and other places all around Louisiana. They'd survived harrowing experiences--having been trapped in sweltering attics they'd ended up chopping their way out of being rescued from rooftops by boats or helicopters winding up on overpasses which were the only high ground or perhaps at either of the agree hells of the Superdome and Convention bear on which had change state festering change state sores of hot thirsty hungry filthy sick anguished humanity crying for back up unlike anything ever before seen in this country. As part of their odyssey they perhaps had to go into stores and take what they needed to survive--which would have been unavailable otherwise. They had seen people die or run across dead bodies. Many had been separated from family and friends--not knowing if they'd lived or died. They'd left pets behind or otherwise lost them. Especially heartbreaking parents and children were separated not to be re-united for weeks or maybe even months. So when they finally arrived in their new Louisiana homes they had brought with them the baggage of their traumas and losses. In the long months after fleeing their beloved city they tried to adjust to life in a new community when they didn't experience if or when they could go back to New Orleans. Many were homesick. Such uncertainty and homesickness on top of the traumas of the flood is hard to command. Sooner or later some were able to return to New Orleans to attempt to alter out and rebuild their homes and pick up the pieces of their lives. But others stayed put wherever they'd evacuated to unable or unwilling to go approve. Baton Rouge and other Louisiana cities find their populations swollen by the influx. For those who started coming back to New Orleans not just from Louisiana but from all the other placed around the country they'd evacuated to the first glimpse of what had happened to their homes and their city was a shattering experience. Times-Picayune columnist Chris Rose in his book "1 Dead in Attic," which I'll be reviewing later after I finish reading it describes how others who'd returned would join him on the bend and cry. Because not only had everything inside their homes been contaminated by floodwaters and forge had change state established they had a monumental task. And on top of all that was the surprise of what had happened to New Orleans. In the first year or so owing to what they'd endured and the stress from all the rebuilding issues they had many were not come up mentally or emotionally yet managed to fasten on because of adrenaline and the wish that New Orleans would go away to receive the help she needed and revive herself. But this began to change. The emotional turmoil darkening Louisiana's life has been multi-faceted and complex. Deeply wounded survivors undergo been dealing with a myriad of issues including FEMA insurance and the super-frustrating "Road Home" program. On top of the malaise that comes from experiencing the hardships of life in a devastated city and seeing ruins and desolation every day all of this wears a body drink. Being separated from family and friends scattered to the four winds also exacts a major knell. measure but not least the awareness of how the Bush Administration has been neglecting New Orleans and how much of the rest of the country has forgotten and abandoned them can only have a deleterious effect on their morale. Many are now afflicted with "Katrina brain"--chronic stress mood swings sleeplessness nightmares difficulty concentrating the feeling that everything is an effort etc. And for these things they need professional help. So over two years after Katrina Louisiana is being tortured by an agonizing epidemic of depression anxiety and other emotional ills. This is statewide because whether the sufferers are in New Orleans or elsewhere in the state all are grappling with the same or similar issues in Katrina'a aftermath and feeling their tormenting mental effects. "the most thorough analyse of the Gulf Coast's mental health showed that while signs of depression and other ills doubled after the hurricanes two years or later those levels have not subsided they have risen... In New Orleans the percentage of people reporting signs of severe mental illness suicidal thoughts and post-traumatic stress disturb increased between March 2006 and the pass of 2007 the survey showed." Said Dr. stamp Minyard. Orleans Parish Coroner. "Years from now when they talk about post-traumatic stress. New Orleans will be the poster child." And as New Orleans City Business reports: "In nine years in adult psychiatry. Stephen Menendez has never before seen a population of young psychotics resistant to all forms of anti-psychotic medication. "We're seeing a lot of populate between the ages of 20 and 30 coming in with their first psychotic breakdown" said Menendez supervisor of adult psychiatry at East Jefferson General Hospital. "They're hearing seeing and sensing things that aren't there. They're paranoid and delusional and they aren't responding to anti-psychotic medications and we don't know why. It seems like a new phenomenon." And then there are Louisiana's traumatized children tortured by frequent nightmares and the inability to rest when it's raining or windy. And many undergo fears involving wind rain or change surface water--bad enough for some to react to take baths. Many are acting out and having problems in educate. Per the Times-Picayune "A survey of 2757 children returning to the New Orleans area within a year of Katrina found that 49 percent met the criteria for a mental health referal. 20 percent had been touched by a hurricane-related death or injury and 33 percent had been separated from parents or guardians." And Louisiana has insufficient resources to ease the pain of the afflicted. Her mental health system is underfunded understaffed and overloaded. Many psychiatrists and other mental health professionals had been forced to break away by Katrina. In New Orleans. 500 area psychiatric beds were wiped out by Katrina. The mentally ill not only in New Orleans but in other Louisiana cities often must act for house in crowded emergency rooms ill-equipped to command their needs or sent to hospitals in northern Louisiana or change surface Mississippi if a bed opens up. The unavailability of treatment is frightening. Even worse the very people who would otherwise be able to alleviate and protect anguished survivors are also in a world of hurt themselves. Mental health professionals have nobody they can talk to about their own storm traumas and are also becoming burned out and police officers traumatized by rescues from flooded rooftops patrolling lawless streets etc. have more easily.

"Post-Katrina Mental Health Services" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 21:23:26

According to the UPI wire a inform has been published detailing how. Although it appears that kids with anxiety and post-traumatic stress problems are able to be educate and continue on with their lives significant issues linger without much help. Many of the students undergo nightmares are hyper-vigilant easily startled irritable depressed or want to avoid things that inform them of the trauma which can consider the loss of family pets and their homes the chew over reported in the Psychiatric Services. “Mental health responses were good during the early part of the crisis but most schools were not able to sustain their efforts,” Jaycox said in a statement. Although it is great to see that the initial push of services for kids affected by the hurricane was successful at getting people approve to their lives it is troubling to think that a generation of children ordain have lingering psychological problems due to the disaster. Perhaps some of that is inevitable and the same could be said for the cater burnout and difficulty accessing services but there must be some solutions. Any ideas out there? Just because media coverage of victims has subsided does not mean that mental health services available to the victims can subside as well. I think you alter a good point in your affix by saying that “it is troubling to evaluate that a generation of children will have lingering psychological problems due to the disaster.” But the lingering problems are not entirely inevitable. With proper mental health services the children will be able to overcome their traumatic experiences. That is why it is important to keep funding mental health services in the affected regions. This led me to wonder whether FEMA is still awarding grants to finance mental health care treatment. Most likely it is not especially not as much as it did in August 2006 with its $34 million dollar contribution. With continued funding programs can be created to instruct new psychologist to assist those in who are feeling burnt out. These psychologists should also be trained in multicultural psychology in request to appropriately broach with the barriers to treatment such as the social stigma of mental illness cultural mistrust and availability issues. "Mentally ill children given up for foster care" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 17:19:52

Almost one of every four children in Virginia's advance care system is there because parents want the child to have mental health treatment a inform commissioned by the General Assembly states. The chew over -- the prove of a months-long examination of the state's foster compassionate and mental health services -- chronicles the difficult decisions that thousands of Virginia parents have made to give custody of their children to the advance care system so they can get mental health services that are otherwise unavailable or unaffordable. We are speaking of up towards 25% of all advance children in Virginia or going by the numbers in the article. 23%. 23%. That's 2008 children. If mental health care had been freely available for remove (or at an income based cost) there would be 23% less advance children in Virginia. And it's not isolated to Virginia. measure year the federal government found that at least 12,700 children were placed in foster care or juvenile jails only because they needed mental health treatment. The chew over called it a significant problem in every state. Given the numbers from Virginia. I think it's safe to alter that number quite a bit upwards. This is an example of the human costs of the lack of an affordable health compassionate system (such as universal health care) which ends up costing society a lot more in the long run.
