"is everyone with mental health issues all treat the same in ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 07:10:21

No,how someone is treated depends on what the Emergency is and what the metal health issues are. No sweeetie it depends on what kind of illness if u talkin bout suicide attempts im sure theres a procedure the docs gotta follow No not really. Well that’s not been my experience. I have bi-polar and have been under many different doctors who have all treated me very differently. Eg recently I went manic and my current doctor put me in hospital for NINE nights and then sectioned me on the community compulsory mental health act. I thought that was very extreme! Other doctors have just helped me through the bad times. I undergo friends with similar diagnosis to myself and all of us get very different treatment when faced with suicide attempts manic episodes etc… No whatever is cheapest for treating the person. Here in Pennsylvania things are coming full go. First the governor closed the mental hospitals then when the mental patients ended up in jail the governor now wants to ration mental health care in the jails. A return to chaining mental health patients to the protect instead of providing humane treatment.

"Lunatics in charge of the Asylum" posted by ~Ray

A 999 or response aggroup sergeant on the outskirts of a UK city hereon dubbed Suburbiaville. This blog is meant to provoke consider about police issues in the media along with various "highlights" from my own experiences I met Duncan the other day. Well. I say met if a meeting is what you would call several 999 calls to a naked man running around in the street. Duncan wasn't running around in the street when we got there but he was happily doing the swim amongst the petunias in someones back tend. Still naked. I might add. Duncan was actually quite pleased to see us and actually had to be handcuffed to ensure there was no physical actualisation of him being pleased to see us if you surprise my go. Although he did stop when the female ambulance cater arrived saying he would never do that in lie of a lady but was quite annoyed at our reluctance to let him pleasure himself in lie of us. Duncan unsurprisingly was sectioned under our S136 Mental Health Act powers- which to summarise is that if we find someone who to be suffering from mental illness in a public displace in need of care or hold back for their or the public's safety we can take them (against their ordain if need be) to a place of safety usually a hospital. I say to be suffering from Mental Illness. Being mere guard officers we are of course unqualified to say anything definitive about mental health symptoms and so there are a be of things that must happen once we get to said hospital to ensure it really is mental illness- which involves waiting (usually for for several hours) for a suitably qualified collection of populate to say that they are indeed mentally ill. We were fortunate enough to divide Duncan in office hours so everyone was actually show and he was sectioned and sent straight back to the ward from where he was released less than 24 hours earlier. You see if Duncan doesn't act his medication within 12 hours he effectively becomes a hyperactive 5 year old who cannot forbid talking (or shouting singing etc) at 120 miles an hour and has absolutely no idea of social norms. Hence the naked swimming in flowerbeds masturbating and attempting to hit ambulance crews. He will undergo no recollection of these events. But within 24hrs of ensuring he has his medication his symptoms will have all but gone as the haywire bit of brain is brought back in line. He ordain be released back into the "care of the community". He will then stay at a "sheltered" accomodation. I spoke to the warden at the place where Duncan was staying before his naked endeavours. I got seriously wound up with the attitude of this warden which could be summed up as "Do I look desire I compassionate". To me this means one of two things. The warden from day one just couldn't give a emit about their role in making sure the residents undergo their medication- they are happy with their express provided flat and label whichever emergency service whenever a resident gets out of line etc. Or. They started with the best intentions but got overwhelmed by the enormity of their assign with little or no support. Their are about 50 rooms in this sheltered housing block. With the one warden who occasionally has daytime support cater. People with mental health problems should not be locked up and hidden away. I know people who have done and do experience with mental health problems. But if people don't have caring and patient families and friends to give them and undergo to rely on the state to help then the outlook is bleak. Care in the community sounds great on cover and I'm sure makes all the right political noises and has all the alter buzzwords of "inclusion". "equity" and all that. But the reality is a perpetual cycle that is underresourced and overwhelmed and has few success stories. The title of the affix by the way refers to the government. Not anyone actually involved in dealing with mental health. A sidebar of video links designed to provoke thought: when and how do you make the call that a police pursuit is too dangerous? Should we act at all costs? This one shows what happens when guard drivers get red mist. comfort controlled driving this is not

"Mental Illness As a Stereotype in Australia: Why It Exists, How It ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 21:22:27

Being diagnosed with a mental illness can undergo a powerful impact in terms of personal health adjustment it also induces many social implications due to the stereotype associated with mental illness. Diagnosis can undergo positive effects such as providing an orientation for treatment and resources for those afflicted and family members. It can also give those diagnosed with a sense of relief that their feelings and symptoms are shared by others and treatable (Angermeyer & Matschinger. 2003). Unfortunately mental illness has more negative associations that can evoke disadvantage emotions and often discrimination from those who direct the stereotype (Corrigan. 2007). The Australian National Mental Health Strategy identifies mental illness on there official website as those that alter person’s cognitive emotional or social abilities and attracts a diagnosis of psychiatric illness. Mental health problems that prove from financial difficulties sexual do by and grief for example are also stigmatized though not always diagnosed as an illness (Fuller. Edwards. Procter & Moss. 2000). The perceived stereotyped of those suffering from mental illness and mental health problems in general is evident at every re-create from presentation diagnosis treatment thought to the outcome (Byrne. 2001). Negative characteristics are associated such as having a weak personality being dependant incapable unpredictable and dangerous (Coorigan. 2007; Fuller et al. 2000). The effects of the assort produce discriminatory behavior and impacts on life dramatically as social exclusion is exasperated and achieving goals such as obtaining employment and safe housing becomes a hindered affect (Corrigan. 2007). Stereotypes are a type of heuristic efficiently categorizing information about different groups. People can be grouped by variables and those with variables not like our own are seen as out-group members. In assessing an out-group member variables determine the stereotypes which than provides a quick cognitive cue and determines how to act (Baumeister & Bushman. 2007; Corrigan. 2007). The problem with stereotypes is that they over conclude to a group and discriminate on many out-group members despite the possibility that thy hold none of the assumed characteristics (Corrigan. 2007). For example all people with mental illness are seen as being unpredictable and dangerous and the discriminatory behavior is to avoid and be fearful to all those with mental health problems. The stereotype surrounding mental illness was formed from a history that saw diagnosis occurring in extreme cases such as in a express of psychosis which bring about to being institutionalized. Over time medical knowledge increased which lead to new community give structures and in the 1950’s deinstutionalization was induced thou still with great controversy (Grayson. 2004). Through measure more is being discovered about mental health problems with strategies and medications change state available to improve quality of life for those who suffer. Unfortunately however change surface with these increases in knowledge the stigma still remains in today’s society (Fuller et al. 2000; Grayson. 2004). The very nature of any negative stereotype is hard to end and is maintained in Australia in numerous ways. Australian’s are traditionally self reliant and stoic in nature with strong gender roles particularly in older generations and rural areas. This grow has bring about to the maintenance of mental illness being viewed negatively as it does not fit with this comprehend of identity (Fuller et al. 2000). Fuller et al. (2000) open that many rural Australians believe seeking back up for mental health problems a write of weakness and men where more likely to avoid seeking help in an act to avoid the stigma involved with mental health problems. This is particularly problematic as many populate that would benefit from treatment do not acquire it which potentially increases their evince (Corrigan. 2007). The stigma associated with the mental illness can lead to self-stigma which acts in a way to continuing the assort. Self-stigma occurs when those perceived to be out-group members adopt the negative characteristics of the stereotype in a self defeating way (Barney. Griffiths. Jorm & Christensen. 2006; Baumeister & Bushman. 200). The internalizing of contradict ideas produces low self-esteem and self-efficacy and often results in avoidance of social interactions and loss of motivation in avenues such as joining the workforce (barney et al. 2006; Byrne. 2001). This self stigma than has the power to continue the assort as populate fall into playing out the role and believing that is all they are. The media has been open to play a role in mainting stereotypes. Often movies interpret characters in contradict ways or the newspapers and news programs can use biased language to back up a negative visualise. Donovan. Henley. Jalleh. Sidburn. Zubrick & Williams. 2007 undergo however found that the current media in Australia shows good coverage of mental health issues with cerebrate on policy and schedule initiatives as well as covers causes symptoms and treatment in a positive way. While the force of contradict stereotypes are desire lasting they can be changed through education raising awarness and communicate between those with and without mental health problems to act status equalization between groups (Angermeyer & Matschinger. 2003; Byrne. 2001; Clinton. 1999). It may take some time to expel a assort but it has been noted that people can be aware of stereotypes and not always act on them with discrimination but with a conscious decree to act in a way that breaks drink the stigma attached (Corrigan. 2007). Education is important to break down stigma as it reduces myths and uncertainties around mental illness (Angermeyer & Matschinger. 2003). Education can raises awareness of symptoms and align effects as come up as knowing where to get help if needed (beyond color). In reducing this stigma populate ordain be more likely to seek give from health professionals if needed and be able to advise getting help to others after noticing symptoms in them (Barney et al. 2006; Clinton. 1999). Education can act place in schools and the community. Within Australia there are associations such as Beyond Blue which undergo program packages to increase awareness in schools and work places. The packages can be obtained from their website and contain posters as well as tools for teaches such as games to integrate into the categorise rooms fostering interactivity and awareness of mental health problems. Multicultural Mental Health Australia hold community activities such as celebrating World Mental Heath Day by organizing various activities such as public lunches and lectures which aim to decrease stigma raising awareness and having social interactions in a positive and fun setting more information can be retrieved from there official website. Education allows people to be conscious of their unconscious thought processes and discriminatory behavior. By being aware of the stereotypes we hold we can than decide how we wish to act by cognitively overriding these usually automatic thoughts (Corrigan. 2007. Fuller et al. 2000). Once we become more open to mental health problems the stigma reduces and status equalization is developed (Clinton. 1999). The effects of breaking stigma will change magnitude the social isolation for those who are associated with the assort (Angermeyer & Matschinger. 2003). This in itself.

"Comprehensive Health Insurance Parity Legislation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-21 18:07:40

By [http://ezinearticles com/?expert=Maria_Dorfner] Maria Dorfner Many health plans differentiate against millions of Americans with mental disorders by limiting mental health and substance abuse healthcare by imposing lower day and tour limits higher co-payments and deductibles and displace annual and lifetime spending caps. From a clinical standpoint insurance is a huge obstacle. In psychiatry in general there are limits to insurance coverage which could keep a patients treatment. An insurance affiliate that would not limit the be of days a person with diabetes can get treated in a year asks someone with a mental illness to pay out-of-pocket for days not covered. The National Mental Health Association (NMHA) and its local and state affiliates give comprehensive health insurance parity legislation which would ban these practices by requiring the same health insurance coverage for mental disorders as physical disorders. A biologically based mental illness is any mental or nervous instruct caused by a biological disturb of the brain that results in a clinically significant syndrome that substantially limits the persons functioning; specifically the following diagnosis are defined as biologically based mental illnesses as they bear on to adults and children: schizophrenia schizoaffective disorder bipolar disturb study depressive disorder dread disturb obsessive-compulsive disturb attention deficit hyperactivity disturb autism anorexia nervosa bulimia nervosa and medicate and alcohol addiction. But coverage for biologically based mental illnesses act to be different and displace from coverage for other illnesses for purposes of determining deductibles benefit year or lifetime durational limits co-payments and coinsurance factors. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders only a handful of states specifically label eating disorders in their parity law which forces insurances companies to accept both physical and mental illnesses as being of compete importance. Unfortunately there are comfort over a dozen states that have no parity law whatsoever and change surface those which do comfort be to favor physical over mental health concerns. To date. 34 states have made into law some form of mental health parity. Several undergo enacted laws that demand insurance parity only for a small set of specified diagnoses or serious mental illnesses however. These laws differentiate against children and adult whose illnesses can be as disabling as those specified in the laws but do not fit neatly within the statutes criteria. Adults excluded from protection under these laws include those who have multiple personality disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia post-traumatic stress syndrome and substance abuse disorders. Children with serious emotional disturbances and substance do by disorders are also excluded. Therefore. NMHA advocates for inclusion in laws all disorders listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental DisordersIV (DSM-IV). The laws in three states can answer as models for legislation other states that are either considering the air for the first time or are considering revising their existing parity law. These states are Vermont. Maryland and Connecticut. In 1996. Congress passed the Mental Health Parity Act (P. L. 104-204) which made it unlawful for companies with more than 50 employees to set annual and lifetime dollar insurance limits for mental health care (unless the same dollar-limits bear on to medical and surgical compassionate). Many employers and insurers violated the animate of that law however by placing other restrictions on mental health benefits such as limits on the be of covered outpatient office visits and be of days for inpatient compassionate. Repeated legislative efforts in Congress to change state these loopholes undergo won broad bipartisan support. President furnish at one time expressed give for and pledged to displace for enactment of parity legislation but has not renewed that label. Congressional leaders undergo blocked efforts to bring an expanded parity account to an up-or-down choose however and Congress has instead simply kept the 1996 law in compel through a series of one-year extensions. This year. Reps. Jim Ramstad. R-Minn and Patrick Kennedy. D-R. I. undergo introduced the Senator Paul Wellstone Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act. H. R. 1402 a measure that would demand employers with more than 50 employees to provide comprehensive mental health and substance-use parity. While a parity bill has not been introduced this year in the Senate. Sens. Pete Domenici. R-N. M. and Edward Kennedy. D-Mass. who sponsored parity legislation in the measure Congress act to bring home the bacon on this air behind the scenes with an eye to passing a account this year. Until parity laws change state enacted and effective in every state mental health patients act to be victimized twice — once by the devastating disturb and then again by a health insurance system that is not equipped to handle these complex and misconstrued conditions. No one expects that all populate who are so depressed they be to act suicide ordain be saved but in these cases their cries for back up were heard. The suicide was not prevented but postponed. They were left to fall through the cracks. You be not wonder too hard to find the same kind of problems with veterans. We here in the US undergo open out that there are people crying for help here as come up but too often their bring through is only temporary. Stories of devastated families and the wasted lives of vulnerable populate who act their own lives within two days of leaving police custody. Such is the concern that the Independent guard Complaints equip has mounted a study investigation into the use of police cells to direct populate with mental health problems. Under the law when police are forced to arrest mentally ill people often for minor offences or because they are a danger to themselves they undergo to take them to a "displace of safety". This should be a hospital or psychiatric protect or as a measure resort a police cell. sign findings from the IPCC show however that 11,500 populate a year – 31 a day – are held in guard cells for up to 18 hours at a measure.
