Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray are using consoles as a leg-up into the homes of customers who are either technologically timid or frugal. The idea has been (admittedly this is an oversimplification) to sell the bet system and have people evaluate the movie format as a bonus then watch them buy the movies later on. Even the PS2 was used to help DVD when DVD players were comfort on the center align. The days of VHS and LD are over.. from now on do you think it'd be possible to launch a successful domiciliate video format WITHOUT packing it into a console?

Yeah of cover a change can open successfully w/o a console. The PS2/DVD comparison is not a good one because DVD had no competitors the Divx thing was already dead by the time the PS2 was launched and DVD was going beat throttle.
Until a new format does act off and neither Blu-ray or HD DVD have yet. I'm not sure if anybody knows what the formula for success is.
With 10 million 360's and approx 200,000 AO's I really don't think that qualifys as move of the equation.

Not actually accurate since HD DVD does not go with the 360. It is an optional add-on and is a concious choice by someone who has already decided that they want to play HD DVD movies. Also when the PS2 came out with DVD support. DVDs were already established and so DVD playback was actually a selling inform to shift more PS2s not the other way around (ie PS2 helping DVD succeed). In terms of the PS3. IMO. Bluray support has hurt the console because the technology wasn't create from raw material enough and made the PS3 too expensive. So instead of doing as much as they hoped to help Bluray the high cost actually cause to be perceived the sales of the PS3 more than anticipated.

Thanks. I completely accept on both counts but I didn't want to have in mind it because I didn't want to ask a question and then put "go around" on it.

VHS. DVD also helped sell the PS2 not the other way around. populate seem to drop the climate back then but the PS2 being able to compete DVDs (which everyone wanted to get into) was a key selling inform for the system. DVD had been around for a while before the PS2 launched and it surely wasn't the expensive impossible to sight PS2 that secured its success with the masses.
Movies aside. Sony needs to be concerned about that 3rd displace rank in next-gen console sales. They're getting their butts handed to them.
Of cover a movie format can launch without a console. I think the HD war is proving that pretty spectacularly. There are millions of 360s out there and just a 100-200k add-ons. And the 2 million PS3s sold are not radically impacting the sales of BD media. Just giving it enough of a bring up to keep it in the bring about. When you change 2 million PS3s in a year and undergo only sold 3 million movies consoles are not a huge factor in the equation. Sony has oversold the importance of the gaming merchandise for home video. They're two different beasts.

The last numbers I heard were 300k SA and 200k AO. That is roughly 40% of the merchandise and pretty significant. BD has less SA players yet more media sales at 1.5 to 2:1. That would be pretty significant as well.
