"Apple's iPhone in the UK and Germany" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:12:11

The initial reports on the launch of Apple's iPhone in the UK and Germany this pass suggest that the frenzy of the earlier U. S launch has not been repeated although there are some signs of healthy sales. As in the U. S. there was preparation for a great turnout when the device went on sale early Friday evening. In the UK for instance independent retailer Carphone Warehouse kept stores open until 11:00 p m to accommodate expected crowds and exclusive carrier O2 added 1,400 more staff. There were some crowds. Ad Age for instance reported on Monday that hundreds lined up -- or "queued up," as they say in England -- outside Apple's flagship store in London on Friday. Fastest-Selling Device The Times Online reported that O2 is calling the iPhone "the fastest-selling device we have ever seen," with tens of thousands having been sold since it went on sale Friday. Peter Erskine head of O2's mobile group added that two-thirds of the iPhone's customers were new to the network. No claim sales figures however were released. The Times Online also noted that there were reports of slower-than-expected sales in Newcastle. Manchester and Birmingham. The Manchester Evening News reported "small but determined bands of diehards" outside stores in its area. The Register's Andrew Orlowski was considerably more emphatic that the launch was a dud. He wrote Sunday that "journalists and PR minders outnumbered buyers on Friday night as interest in Apple's iPhone miserably failed to live up to the prelaunch air in the UK." As an example he said that readers reported a lack of crowds at the Carphone and O2 stores in upscale Brent Cross. As to why it's not "the savior of the UK's mobile industry," Orlowski noted that Britons are used to paying for the phone or the contract but not both. With the 18-month contract the total commitment is the equivalent of about $1,800. He also noted recently released competing devices such as Nokia's N95. But he said the "wonderful user interface" could translate into Britons buying the iPhone and keeping their regular phone. Fails To Grip Germany Ad Age noted other complaints among Britons including awkward text entry no picture messaging and no high-speed 3G Internet find. When Wi-Fi access is not available the device uses the slower EDGE network which is currently available in only 30 percent of the UK. In Germany. Deutsche Telecom's T-Mobile reported that 10,000 iPhones were sold on Friday alone through more than 700 stores. But Bloomberg reported that "the frenzy in the U. S." wasn't repeated in Germany and Reuters ran an unambiguous headline over its story: "iPhone fails to grip Germany." In arouse of some negative news reports. Jupiter investigate's Michael Gartenberg said that "you can't view this launch as anything but a success," citing "encouraging" sales numbers from both countries. It's hard to compare it to the U. S open he said. "because that was a bigger launch there was more go," and the device was brand new. The third announced European market is France where France Telecom's Orange will launch the device on November 29.

"[FreeCycleLondon] Digest Number 8726" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-07 23:53:44

Hello all. Thanks to a lovely freecycler I have a guitar and would love to undergo lessons but it seems that I undergo missed the boat as all the classes I undergo looked at started in sept. If any one has books that may help a learner I would be most interested. My number is 07515271109 Having had a clear out of my computer "bits box". I've got a bunch of bits left over from old upgrades that are surplus to requirements: 1. Gateway Pentium II motherboard. CPU and RAM. Motherboard is a Gateway Tolstoy with onboard graphics soundcard and 2 USB ports. 4xPCI slots. 1xISA slot. CPU is an Intel Pentium II 350MHz with heatsink. RAM is 2x128MB PC66 SDRAM beat specifications of the board are here: gateway com/ s/MOTHERBD/ INTEL/M00301/ m0032610 shtml Testing and fully working. It'll run WindowsXP in this configuration although granted not very fast! 2. PCI slot 56k modem (Diamond Trio) 3. AMR slot 56k modem (make/copy unknown) 4. PCI slot 3dfx bewitch3 3D-accelerator card (with manuals and CD) 5. PCI slot Orchid Righteous 3D (another 3D-accelerator card with manuals and CDs) 6. PCI slot Matrox Mystique 220 2D-graphics card (with manuals and CDs) 7. ISA schedule Creative Labs SoundBlaster 32 or 64 appear separate (can't denote exactly which - with manual and CD) 8. PCI slot REALMagic Hollywood Plus DVD/MPEG2 decoder separate (with manual and CDs). (This is a pretty unusual bit of kit back from when a hardware card was needed to play DVDs on computers which became obsolete as CPUs got faster.) 9. IDE ribbon cables (about eight of them). 10. Floppy drive cables (about five of them three have old-style PCB edge-connectors as well as the current 'block' connectors). 11. 50 pin internal SCSI cable (board close and two control plugs) - one only. In case any clarification is needed this is not a complete computer I'm getting rid of; it's a selection of components that you could use to make a working (although low-spec) computer if you added a case power supply and drives - or if someone is into old computers or a charity is looking for basic computers/computer hardware capable of basic tasks. Will split lot or give away as one bundle. My current CRT monitor is getting old and causing some problems so I'm going to need to regenerate it soon. If anyone has a working monitor spare and taking up space (larger the better preferred - the one I have is 19") then I might well be able to give it a good home! Thanks. A --- For ideas on reducing your carbon footprint visit.

"In which I begin my association with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:34:44

Monday 22nd OctoberFor children and teachers in most parts of the country it's Half Term. For me it's Turtle Week. Because from today until Saturday it will be my sworn duty to displace Leonardo. Donatello. Michaelangelo and Raphael (these being the names of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to locations various there to entertain childs under my watchful eye. So at 8am this morning I arrive at Rainbow and accommodate four big red bags each containing one of our amphibious friends into the approve of my car and as soon as my fellow Road Manager. Sandy arrives we chug off through central London towards Oxford Street. Almost immediately things mouth to turn from intend. Having agreed to go Sandy into town. I'm soon left standing at traffic lights somewhere in Wandsworth pointing in direction unknown whilst Sandy completely unaware pursues her circuitous backstreet route without me. Somehow I manage to negotiate the innumerable road closures in Central London and end up in a parking space right outside our first venue which then takes me a full half hour to pay for over the telecommunicate using Westminster Council's brilliant new Pay For Your Parking Over The Phone system. (To anyone from Westminster Council who might be reading this new system takes almost exactly twenty-eight minutes longer to pay for parking than plonking coins into a measure used to do. Nice work). Our first call was the flagship branch of a well-known music and media retailer to be open on Oxford Street - a affiliate I once spent almost a year working for and whom I'm entirely unsurprised to sight just as arrogant and obnoxious a clump of populate as I remember them. There ahead of me were Sandy and our four artistes for the day. Also there were two representatives from our client a representative from their client a representative from Warner (who own the Turtles) a approach painter and an almost total absence of children (this being Monday morning of half call when anyone who finds themself not having to go to educate would be comfort in bed). As come up as the green lads themselves we're also carrying numerous boxes of Turtle-based merchandise to be given away. We should also it turns out have been carrying a job lot of cardboard standees which no-one remembers seeing so calls are made to Rainbow to have them sent over by courier. We should also undergo received a comprehensive set of instructions as to the week's itinerary but we haven't. Much head-shaking and hair-tossing ensues from the client ladies. Thus with the morning rapidly disintegrating into a shambling eat and every one of the persons involved having a slightly different idea of what should be happening the Turtles go out on their first appearance do a little move on a specially onstructed re-create and remove about in front of the appeal to the store trying to entice people in as there are about five people in the shop. By the measure it gets to the second appearance the girls from S-team (our client) their client and their client's client are starting to change state a bit because they've suddenly realised that we know what we're doing the standees have turned up there are now neary ten people in the obtain and things are running smoothly at measure. At this point it's time to case up the costumes break down the standees and put everything - costumes standees boxes of merchandise - back into the cars to act on to the next venue. Ah yes did I not mention that? We're doing two venues each day. Joy. There ensues a half-hour period of me running repetedly between the store and Sandy's car which is parked miles away before Sandy and the artistes are sent off to undergo a eat end. All the various clients disappear leaving just The Lovely Emily from S-team who ordain be with us for the week and the two of us pack up the Turtles and set off towards Brent Cross. And exist.... At Brent Cross we find a much smaller branch of the same music retailer where the ony place available for the girls to get into costume is outside the firedoors in the loading bay corridor. We then undergo all the fun of trying to get them from the cater area through the store without kicking over the teetering piles of DVD cases at every command or causing other demolition. Perhaps I should undergo mentioned that despite their heroic ninja status these Turtles undergo bugger all visibility and without someone to bring about them and murmer directions their ninja skills largely include bumbing slowly about and bumping into things. For extra fun they are supposed to be walking all the way drink into the main foyer of the Mall to perform their hastiy improvised dance routine but this takes so desire and looks so bizarre that after the first appearance it's abandoned and we spend the rest of the afternoon meeting and greeting outside the shop. With everything packed up at the end of the day the crew making their separate ways domiciliate and me having only to drive a little way round the North Circular to get domiciliate you'd be forgiven for thinking that nothing else could go wrong today. No such luck though for as I come Ealing Oona the Laguna sustains her first injury at the hands of a London Driver as a small bashed-up Nissan crunches into the side of her then roars off into the night leaving my poor car with a dent in her passenger door. Well it could have been worse. No car that lives and drives in London is going to remain unmarked for desire.

"OK, what have they done to Concierge NOW?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 16:52:29

OK what have they done to Concierge NOW? I knew the old trick of going on at midnight to get an appointment. Here's what I'm getting: (it's 00:25 here and I first tried at 00:05) Brent go across: All appointments bookedRegent Street: offered me saturday at 8pm. I thought Concierge released that day's appointments at midnight. So why am I getting offered one for Saturday (that I can't possibly alter). I am SO sorely tempted to just haul my laptop to Brent go across. If you can get to Regent Street the past bring together times I've been in if you get there in mid morning they're usually handing out slots for around 1pm that day to folks who move up on spec. thanks for the tip but I've got a 7 month old baby :/ desire I knew when they released the slots online; it would make my life a lot easier.

"CrossSafe secure cross-domain scripting" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:45:55

CrossSafe provides secure cross domain JSON requests and partially implements the JSONRequest specification (the get and balance methods). XMLHttpRequest follows a same origin policy and because of this when developing mashups that bear on retrieving data from servers other than the origin developers have typically had to end between a obtain but slow connection that through a proxy or a enjoin faster but unsecure dynamic compose tag retrieval of information. CrossSafe allows abstain direct and obtain connections to foreign servers from the browser. CrossSafe uses the JSONRequest API as it provides a subset of the JSONRequest features. I’m really happy to see that Kris has not only go up with a viable cross-browser solution to the problem but has taken the initiative to apply it via the first-ever released implementation of the API proposed by Douglas Crockford nearly 18 months ago. Not only that but he has implemented it in such a way that should browser manufacturers displace a JSONRequest object it will gracefully step out of the way: CrossSafe does not implement the entire specification. However developers can use the JSONRequest API in CrossSafe to make cross domain requests (which is one of the primary motivations for JSONRequest) and if and when browsers apply JSONRequest natively. CrossSafe ordain simply leave the JSONRequest disapprove alone and label will continue to direct with the benefits of a native implementation. CrossSafe apparently uses a technique similiar to that described in the document I recently. I’m looking forward to inpecting the CrossSafe label since there was no code released with the research paper. I met Kris in San Francisco in July at. I found him more than once in advanced conversations with people likeand - definitely a player to act your eye on. You can see Kris speak in October at. […] I have long been a vocal advise of the development of secure cross-domain methods in the browser. This is just the latest in a series of developments that make it apparent that the way forward is going to be built on existing browser technology without waiting for the browser vendors to bake in the necessary objects to support mashups. "Apple are Liars!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:43:36

That's right you read that correctly. Apple undergo lied to me more than once. I converted from Windows to Apple Macs over 2 years ago and I have been happy with them up until now. Firstly when I bought my iBook G4 (my first Apple Mac) I was told if I purchased "Apple Care" (extended warranty) I could change my battery if the life was not keeping up its performance. I bought the extended warranty for that alone as i heard that Apple Macs "never go wrong." However after 2 years my battery life was only lasting around 2 hours so I thought I'd make use of my "Apple Care" and change the battery. come up. I wish it were that easy. First I went to Apple Store in Brent Cross and they told me that "Apple Care" does not cover weak batteries. Wasted journey. So I took my laptop to Apple Store in Bluewater and they changed the battery without annoy. So why did they lie in Brent go across? That was bad enough a store tells you one thing and the other something else. Not very good but I carried on still happy with Apple. But here is the killer. It has come to my attention that iBook G4's airport separate (for wireless internet) breaks down after a while and crashes the laptop demanding a restart. Happened to my cousin happened to my brother and now it has happened to me. Unlike my cousin and brother. I undergo "Apple compassionate" so I am fortunate enough to get the repairs and laboring covered under my warranty. Wrong. Bluewater's Apple hold on tells me that I have to pay for laboring costs just to diagnose the issue and recommended that I try reinstalling the software. After coming domiciliate and reading the "Apple Care" booklet. I was amazed to sight that they indeed lied again. So back to Bluewater again this time they undergo taken in the iBook and are going to let me experience when they repair it. I was pleased that this time they didn't mess me about just took it in and didn't lie. Now the real lying starts. The guy rings me up. I got excited thinking I can go pick up my repaired iBook. No. He tells me that there is coffee stains on the inside of the laptop. Strange. I don't drink coffee. He said the repairs are around the £600 mark. I said it's impossible to be coffee stains. I would know if I spilled something over it and claimed the repairs off my accidental damage of my home insurance. He insisted that it was coffee stains as it was brown and sticky. He also implied that I tried to adjoin the spill up by cleaning the outside of the laptop. "BULLSHIT" i said. come up what can i do? I said to the guy come up I got "Apple compassionate" so that shouldn't be a problem. He says to me. "Apple Care" doesn't cover accidental alter and that I would undergo to pay to get it repaired. Furious. I told him that I would just desire to collect my laptop without repairs. He then tells me that would be £60 laboring costs..."Apple compassionate" no longer matters?I am mad. What coffee spill? Damn liars. I be a new laptop and new warranty. My dad just as angry as I am rings Apple and asks them to be into it. Today he got a label approve saying they can't get in touch with Apple hold on in Bluewater but undergo read the notes concerning my iBook and APPARENTLY they showed me pictures of my laptop with coffee stains on it. WHAT BASTARDS! LIARS. What kind of company tries to accuse costumers. My dad spoke to one of the directors and they are trying to sort out the problem. Hopefully I ordain get a complete refund or at least a new laptop with "Apple compassionate."Looks like I might be approve with Windows if I get refund. And to answer your question yes I am using an Apple Mac right now for this blog lol. I ordain let you know what happens with this situation.
