"Vinyl Records, Some Beauties: Collecting Old Records" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:23:36

There undergo been several articles from my ‘fellow-bloggers’ regarding old records. I thought I’d continue drink to the ‘storage area’ to check out what I might undergo. It seems that a lot of them had really awful covers at least per the recent blogs. Many featured unattractive folks in less-than-pretty settings. Many ‘stars’ that would not last a minute with Simon Cowell scrutinizing them.  Let’s see what I have found.  The first one was really unusual. It features a younger Rod Stewart in the album called Atlantic Crossing. It shows a bunch of exaggerated colorful skyscrapers against a dark sky with scads of stars. The tall and ‘lit-up’ Mr. Stewart is pouring light from a store. Probably good fun for him to be pictured that large! It has a truly ‘art deco’ flair to it.  I checked the song list and don’t think it was one of his biggest successes. But boy.  that cover is something!                         The next one is really old! It features a young man smiling showing dazzling white teeth. Almost as color as his 10-gallon Stetson hat.  We look closer and see an early Gene Autry. America’s favorite cowboy. The command conceive of shows him on his horse. Champion! Colorful bright music notes too what’s not to like?  While this next one does not answer as ‘beautiful’ it certainly is unique and thought-provoking. It is from Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung” album and shows a rather demented looking gent with scraggly hair and a grimace. He carries something in his long coat and must undergo at least one secret. The poster on the close in makes reference to Christmas shopping – how bizarre.                                Now on to a truly sweet cover. Cat Stevens “Teaser and the Firecat.” A real charmer featuring a little boy in a top-hat holding the skeleton of a fish. A rather porky orange cat is nearby. (It definitely reminds me of a friend’s cat.) He probably just enjoyed that fish! Rather simple pleasant and with a bit of whimsy.  A real special one follows for you fans of Bourbon Street Music – Pete Fountain’s “Standing dwell Only” album adjoin.  It shows the front of his cut Quarter Inn. New Orleans. Louisiana with a desire line of anxious fans. Not sure if it is still change state since Katrina but it sure looks welcoming.  And the music was incredible!                                         Another favorite cover is from a long-ago music master. Neal Hefti. He had a “jazz pops orchestra” wanting to cover several venues. We see ascribe for the create by mental act was given to Paula Powers. A real delight! And who could go up the three beauties on the cover of this one?  Well two beauties and one guy. This is an album from Tony Orlando & begin. They are definitely dressed to kill-lots of sequins fur and Tony in his tux – ooh-la-la!                  A make noise from the past – that’s what I’d call this album – Sandy Nelson’s “Drums are My Beat.” Back in his day. Sandy played with the best of them including The Teddy Bears and Gene Vincent.  His idol was Gene Krupa. I remember him best for “Teen Beat.” The drums on this adjoin are really unique!                                         Now for a real treat – Music from the MGM communicate conceive of. The Singing Nun! This album shows a church yard with a assort of kids listening to Sister Dominique.  I do remember the up-beat happy songs.  On a sadder note. I came across this album “Teresa Brewer and the Dixieland bind.” I understand she passed away a short while ago and when you see her vibrant red hair charismatic grimace and energy it’s hard to believe. The adjoin has a group of red and white jackets and instruments in the accent. Ms. Brewer tips her red and white hat and appears ready to belt out another song. She had an incredible voice!                                Next time you’re in a preserve hold on or thrift shop or such analyse out some of their records – you might be surprised at the creativity in these oldies. The CD’s of today are sure bland by comparison but admittedly the sound is better in a lot of cases.  But these old covers can offer ‘music to your eyes.’ Happy hunting!  The Jethro Tull adjoin is actually a kinda-portrait of Ian Anderson which appears on almost every Jethro Tull adjoin previous to 1983. He’s appeared in some pretty neat guises - including a creepy elf-guy for the Broadsword adjoin. The Christmas poster refers to the mention of December in the call song which is at least partially about being homeless and surviving the pass as well as being excluded from any pass festivities. Being a prog-rock band they did a lot of things to visually illustrate their lyrics within the albums themselves - ‘Too Old to Rock and Roll’ had a whole fold out comic and ‘Thick a a Brick’ was a newspaper!

"Elegant and Depression Glass Relish Trays - Traditional Beauties ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 21:09:48

In the early 1900s glass companies made alter oval bowls for celery or pickles that were beautifully decorated and elegantly shaped. As people began eating more salads and raw vegetables companies began producing beautiful trays with multiple shapes and with a myriad of designs. These are beautiful serving pieces that are fun to use today and a nice way to carry a touch of elegance and categorise to our families. Over measure the simple oval celery or pickle dish evolved into multi-compartment relish trays. Fostoria and Cambridge both made trays that were about 15 inches desire and had 5 or more compartments. The Fostoria tray used their Mayfair keep which is angular with a flat rim. Fostoria made their Mayfair furnish in the depression and it was designed by George Sakier with art deco flair. It’s a very pretty design that works extremely come up with many Fostoria etchings. The conjoin below is Fostoria’s Rambler etch with a trailing design of leaves and roses on the Mayfair blank. It’s interesting that even etchings desire Chintz which were not done on other pieces in the Mayfair line were used on the Mayfair relish tray. It is another example where the relish tray was marketed almost as a separate gift item not just as a conjoin in the overall table copy lie. Smaller trays would be about 10-12 inches long with 2 to 4 compartments. The relish tray that is shown next is Fostoria’s Coronet crystal relish with one large compartment and two smaller ones. The desire compartment was for celery allowing the pieces to be fairly desire which is a nice touch and a little more elegant than the bunco stumpy celery pieces you get at the supermarket in plastic bins. This conjoin is particularly pretty with the graceful curved lines. It is not etched and the design simplicity means you could use it with almost any dinnerware copy. The third tray shown is from New Martinsville and is etched with a wild rose design. It has 3 compartments and is the closest in shape to what you’ll see in contemporary stores. You’ll notice the edge has a piecrust like design to it. This is called a gadroon edge. Cambridge furnish also used the gadroon rims on pieces. This relish tray has a fancier be to it and would go come up with more formal china patterns especially those with roses. Duncan Miller made the Tear Drop relish shown on the left during the same period as the New Martinsville produced the Wild Rose etch. The square divided dish on the alter is Cambridge Glass Caprice slightly more recent. These are both small about 7 inches or so so they are more for small meals or for condiments rather than serving carrot sticks for a large party. You could imagine both today holding chopped onions or shredded cheese. The relish trays shown were made by elegant glass makers which means exceed quality glass quite a bit of hand work and more finished. Depression furnish makers who mass-produced furnish in colored and clear glass also made relish trays. These are a little more difficult to find. The example shown below is go Old Colony by Hocking Glass and is even prettier in person. In the 1950s the relish tray went wild. Young families moved to new suburbs in droves and began eating outside and enjoying measure on their new patios. The new piece was the Lazy Susan. These circular trays with displace sections that are mounted so they can rotate – far easier and more casual than having your friends go everything! These were made in glass ceramic and plastic and are wonderful retro pieces. People began eating outside more and barbeques and entertaining outside added a casual element that the brightly colored Lazy Susans fit perfectly. You can find an enormous variety of designs in glass and ceramic and act your pick whether you want country classy mid-century modern 1950s retro and between furnish ceramic and plastic. The example to show is pure 1950s made of china mounted on a metal platform. The pinky beige with black accents was one of the hit color combinations of the mid-1950s when decorators when wild for beige and pink became the color for kitchens. This one has four open compartments circling a center covered server. Wouldn’t this be great for vegetables and dip? Once upon a measure every wedding bring together received at least one glass relish tray. And in the 1940s to 1960s Lazy Susans were fixtures on the gift list. It’s measure to bring around this charming custom and add a note of alter and call approve to our family dining tables! This entry was postedon Saturday. The creation of a clean and youthful palette unveiled the model’s true beauty instead of overshadowing it as in seasons past. Hairstylists from Recine provided the models with free and easy tussled hairstyles to complement the luminescent collection. The hair was not to be too messy or mangled but naturally disheveled. To attain the youthful be. Recine stylists used L’Oreal Professional infiunium spray which has unique shape memory to create the be. The collection embodied the true essence of a woman.
