Melissa Mills is one of only a handful of people in North America whose hearts undergo regained the capacity to handle daub through their bodies cardiologist Dr. Ivan Rebeyka said at a news conference Tuesday at Edmonton's Stollery Children's Hospital. The teenager had received the artificial heart on Aug. 30. 2006 after her kidneys and lungs began to shut down. Months before that the Grade 8 student had suffered a bout of the flu and a virus had moved along a deadly path into her heart enlarging it to the inform where it couldn't handle properly. Doctors feared she would die and she was moved to the top of the North American donor enumerate for a heart transplant. Soon after the artificial heart was implanted. Rebeyka said doctors noticed Melissa's own heart was trying to act over when the artificial heart was periodically turned down. "We were still planning a heart transplant when we noted that her own heart seemed to be getting stronger and stronger as the weeks passed," he said. "At first the Berlin Heart was turned down for short periods then for longer and longer as we watched the heart to make sure it could do its job." The artificial heart worked to act the teenage girl alive while her own heart healed. Rebeyka said. The Berlin Heart was finally removed this past January and Melissa was out of the hospital and approve in her home in Canmore in southern Alberta two months later. Melissa a pretty blonde teenager remembers her thoughts when doctors told her her heart was recovering: "Wow! Now I get to keep my own and I don't undergo to go through all that stuff that the transplant populate have to." After five months she'd grown used to hauling around the external device with its long hoses and an external pump. She bought clothes that were sizes too big to accommodate the dressings tubing and the device itself. She found a dress for a dance measure December though a hose peeped out of the bottom of it. Without the artificial heart she's more comfortable although she remains self-conscious about her surgery scars. "It's easier to consume," Melissa said cradling her artificial heart in her hands. "Now I can shower for how long I be or until the water runs out," she laughed. It's been a tumultuous journey for Melissa's mom. Sharon Mills. "When they first thought that her heart was beginning to ameliorate it was something you were scared to hope for." Thrilled that her daughter was healing but terrified at the thought the girl's own heart might not be strong enough to let her defeat. Mills stayed by her daughter's bedside morning and night. "We comfort evaluate of it as a day-by-day thing. As long as she does what's expected of her we evaluate she'll be OK," she said. Melissa is on such a strict medication schedule that her mom carries a watch alarm to remind the family when she has to take her pills. "When we got for an outing we don't walk the mall for hours at a time shopping because she has to rest if she gets overtired," Mills said. She even has to guard against her typical teenager sleeping in too much. "It stresses the heart if she sleeps too much because she's without her fluids," she said. "If you drink too much all at once it stresses the heart. Or you don't consume enough it stresses the heart. "No Rollerblading no contact sports. We've found a new normal." Mills admits she's turned into a hyper-vigilant parent overprotective of her daughter after months of fighting to keep her alive. The adjust test came during a shopping trip to West Edmonton Mall on Monday when Mills agreed to let Melissa tour the washroom on her own. "I was pacing a little bit until she got back," she said. "I'll get used to that."
